Hi,
I'm a regular runner happily doing 10km at a time but I have an issue and I have been to experts and fellow runners for advice.
I keep getting to mile 4/5 and getting blisters/rubs on the side of the ball of my feet (yes both) so can only run another mile before the pain is too much.
I have tried the following:

  • Gait analysis which resulted in new trainers (had them nearly a year now)
  • Count less different socks think 1000 mile socks
  • Double socking
  • Blister plasters
  • Wrapping my feet in tape
  • Anti blister plasters on my actual trainers
-Changed shoe laces Other than smothering my feet in vaseline every run what can I do. Any and all suggestions welcome.

I have a suggestion, but it's a weird one:

Do you have particularly soft feet? Do you ever have pedicures or moisturise at home? Maybe that's the problem.
You could try walking barefoot more around the house, or in the garden in warm weather, and avoid moisturising the soles of your feet. Toughen them up a bit, but not so much that they go all dry and cracked.

Like I said, it's a weird suggestion and you probably don't want hard feet!

@CantBelieveImHere Tough one,
I have to heavily chalk my hands whenever I use the hanging bars at the gym. Really really chalk them so much that when I walk from the box to the bar, I leave a trail of white. And then I can hang forever while other users jump down after a minute or 2 because of pain in their palm
Could chalk or talcum be an option?
You need to reduce the friction, so either go dry (chalk / talcum) / antiperspirant or go wet (lubricant, some kind of body oil ). Have you actually tried vaseline ? Did it work?

Have you tried neoprene sole or changing your socks after 4miles?
What type of tape did you use? Physio or paper?

I was a gymnast 3 decades ago, and we used to tape our hands with paper tape at training

This is a bit of an expensive suggestion but you could try a shoe with a ‘splay’ toe box- Altra as the main brand. The position of the blisters suggests that your shoes are too narrow. I train in Altras and then race in Hokas ( which are a bit narrow) for the cushioning and tape/ silicon powder like hell. It does work for me but everyone’s different.

Thanks for the suggestions. I realise in my op that I didn't say I am currently surgical spiriting my feet as well to harden them up.
After 2 weeks of no running (letting them heal properly) I went out for my first run last night and I think I may (fingers crossed) found a winning combination.
Gel Metarsal foot pads, with blister prevention patches on my trainers and compression socks. 4 miles done with no hot spots or pain.
