I hate exercise.. help

I need to start regular exercise. I have never been someone who liked exercising. I'm not a lover of going to the gym or even exercise classes as I'm self conscious.
I'm not disciplined enough to exercise on my own.
I don't mind walking the dog or possibly swimming.

I do however need to improve my fitness significantly and lose weight.

I always feel tired... have no energy ... and can't be bothered.

How do I motivate myself???

Get a swim buddy, arrange swim dates so you can't back out!
I like swimming as I count lengths and can see that I'm making progress each time.

I, rather crazily, now seek out to exercise, but I was always a hater. What got me motivated was seeing a personal trainer. Initially, I thought seeing him once a week should be enough. I soon realised by not doing something in between, I was both wasting my sessions as I couldn't improve, and causing myself a lot of pain as I was so stiff in between sessions! It was a slow process, but within maybe 6 months, I was finally self-motivated.

I do believe there's something for everyone, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed weights, it feels great being strong!

Exercising has definitely given me loads more energy, I'd highly recommend it 😀

Yes, I got into exercise through a personal trainer as well, years ago.

It got me into the habit, after she moved I just continued without her.

Doing something in a team.is great too, netball or softball, where you turn up as don't want to let the team down

Or sign up for something with a friend.

Doing it with someone is easier Smile

I’m the same. It’s hard to find something you like but that is the key.

I found that surprisingly I loved spinning classes. In fact I must start that again as I really did enjoy it.

I also like walking. Either just urban walking or n the countryside. Sometimes with music sometimes without. Or a book on Audible.

You do not have to be a gym person. Or a swimmer. Or a class person. Just moving is good.

I lost a significant amount of weight and improved my fitness tenfold by walking. I was strict about doing 10,000 steps at least, every day. I took every opportunity to walk instead of drive, and walked at a fair pace. I was also strict about doing 30+ minutes exercise per day. I made a point of going out for walks. I also did a very laidback version of low carb. I used a Fitbit to record steps and exercise and the Fitbit app to record food and water intake. It worked really well for me before I picked up an injury and then had numerous health issues. Many people on here will tell you walking is not enough but I found it to be great, even better if you have a dog to enjoy it with.

  1. Have your iron levels checked if you’re feeling like that.
  2. I was you. I hated exercise. Well, I thought I did - I just hadn’t found the right exercise for me. I joined a gym, got a personal trainer and I’m now there 3-4 times a week lifting weights and have been for 2 years Grin
I hate cardio and group exercise with a passion but I love weights. I just tried different things until I found what I liked.

Chillychicken - it’s taken me years but I have finally figured out I hate classes too. Other than spinning. Back in the 90s I liked basic aerobic classes and step classes when that came in. (I’m old). But I’ve tried body pump etc and really don’t like them. I find I’m so busy trying to keep up I’m not doing the move correctly.

Puppylovebaby - lots of people like yoga - there is lots on YouTube. Yoga with Adrienne is popular.

Key is definitely finding something you love that you can fit in to your life.

I personally really like weights when I'm tired because you get loads of breaks between sets and it feels like ages as it's about 1 minute on, 2 minutes rest. It feels less "in your face" than going for a run when you're a bit bleugh. Also, don't be self-conscious. If you're bigger you'll probably be able to kick ass (all things being equal a bigger person can lift more than a smaller one) and weights are really empowering. At my gym there are a few bigger women who are seriously strong!

Starting to exercise and slight changes to your diet can drastically improve mood and well-being. I have many clients you started off like you and exercise has been a great factor at improving the health and well being - and lots of them hated it to start with, just like you.
Have you thought about going to a class with a friend or to a quieter gym and doing small group training to build your confidence?

I'm here to echo the advice to get a personal trainer.. I hate exercise but needed to do something and I really needed to be pushed - going for a 30 minute walk every other day just wasn't cutting it..

I find with having a PT I don't have to think at all; she pushes me SO much harder than I would ever push myself; she makes sure I'm getting a good mix of cardio/weights etc, that I warm up and down properly, that my form is correct, and that I progress; I also find it less embarrassing to be bright red and sweaty when I'm 'with' someone rather than on my own... and, in my case, she's funny and I like chatting (when I can speak) for an hour or so twice a week!

I'm now more confident about exercise in general - I've started kayaking and I'm taking swimming more seriously.. I still hate running, and I hate that being thin and a runner is seemingly the only acceptable way of being 'fit' in our society, but there you go..

ChocOrCheese · 13/05/2019 17:30

Add me to the PT enthusiasts. I tried one nearly 3 years back as I wanted to know how to use weights to guard against osteoporosis. Was dead scared and thought I would hate it. Now you can't keep me out of the gym. You need to find something you really enjoy, and there WILL be something, but you won't necessarily be able to find it by yourself.

Good luck.

You need to find something you love enough to want to do. Mine is rowing, I would hate a personal trainer, weights, don’t like what chlorine does to my skin, don’t like cycling on the roads on my own do have given it up since getting rid of STBXH.

I love walking but can’t commit to a group and wouldn’t walk long distances on my own all the time.

After a few years of illness/injury I have returned to rowing. I don’t mind rowing alone (in my spare bedroom), I don’t row at my gym because their machines are not as nice as mine. Being back on the water at weekends is amazing, am now in training for a rowing marathon.

If you find something you really like doing I am sure it won’t seem such a slog. If it wasn’t for loving rowing I am sure I would be sat on my backside!
