Help! Running injury

I've recently started running on a treadmill, and have developed a pain in my left hip, it hurts to put weight on it. Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so, do you know what it is, and what can I do to make it better?

Could be bursitis, it's really common.

I've had it twice, and each time took a week or two break for it to heal. Doesn't take too long, and when you get back to running it's best to ease back in slowly, lots of walking to warm it up.

Mine still aches now and then but it's manageable.

You could be me. Exactly the same thing happened to me. Got to week4 of couch 2 5k and bam. Can't do it. Definitely bursitis for me, have had it before in the other hip.

Specifically, trochanteric bursitis. If it doesn't go away with rest and anti inflammatories then there is a steroid jab you can have.

Thank you everyone! That's really helpful Smile

So annoying though! Running is so efficient as a means of exercise. Hope you sort your issue soon.

I went to a physio recently with similar. I was told absolutely no running and as little walking as I can manage but cycling is fine. Sports massage helped and long term I was told to start Pilates and sort my core strength out. Hopefully I’ll be running again in a couple of weeks.

Youwantshoesinashoeshop · 03/05/2019 19:12

I absolutely second cycling. I did 2 hours of that today with nary a twinge.

Youwantshoesinashoeshop · 03/05/2019 19:14

And I'm sure its right about core strength. My problems only started since pregnancy and birth. Before that everything worked fine. After.... like the Suez canal between my abdominal muscles...

I really love running - it really clears my head and calms me down. Cycling it is then, for a while at least!

So irritating, bodies! Enjoy your cycling. Almost as good as running if you include a few gentle hills and allow a bit more time.

Also, have your gait analysed in a running shop to check that you have the right running shoes.

OP, it’s rubbish isn’t? I’ve never really been into fitness but have been running for about a year/ 18 months. I actually cried yesterday at the thought of not doing the route I’d mapped out for today. I was a bit surprised to find how much I love running (as a fat-ish 40-something I’m not the obvious fitness junkie). You’re right that it clears the head and the sense of achievement of going further than you thought you could go is incredible. Fingers crossed we’re all back in our trainers soon!

I have had a couple of running injuries recently and was told to do Pilates based exercises to help. Might be worth looking in to?

Dexterslockedintheshedagain · 04/05/2019 12:46

I think it's a good idea to get my gait analysed. I've had it done before and bought appropriate footwear, I really noticed a difference! And Pilates - yes I'll definitely try that. Had a shoulder problem and Pilates helped that.
Thanks for all your suggestions, you're all helping a 50something keep hold of her sanity!!!!
