DVT after marathon

So my DH walked a marathon today, in new boots and no training. He's unsurprisingly a wreck, but he also has something I wasn't expecting - a pronounced bump on his lower shin/calf. Just one side. It's quite firm, but I'm still worried about DVT.

I'm also super paranoid person, liable to unnecessarily panic. It could be just a tight muscle? If anyone has any similar experiences or suggestions, I'd be very keen to hear! Thanks

Get it checked out, I developed a DVT & if not treated can be fatal. Is it painful? Mine was just like a dull ache, not exactly painful but an unusual sensation that I was aware of.

Thanks @Ragwort - that must have been scary. What caused it?

his whole body is in pain. I gave the leg a light massage and it didn't seem to cause any additional pain. It's quite a pronounced bump, then his feet are a bit puffy - but again that's sort of what I'd expect after such a long walk. Did you have any other symptoms?

A pronounced bump may be something like a haematoma - a deep bruise - with DVTs more likely to cause a general selling of the calf, with firmness of the calf muscle and possibly redness. In saying that, it would probably be a good idea to get it seen if it is still there today. I am not surprised his feet are puffy! Hopefully this is not something he will do again.

Sounds like a torn muscle.
He needs to get medical advice asap.

If you suspect dvt, massage is the worst thing you can do. But it really doesn't sound like a dvt.

Are people really so unfit these days that they need training to go out and walk 26 miles?

A DVT tends to look like a hot red swollen patch, usually on the calf. A bump sounds more like muscle damage. Might be worth getting it checked at OOH. I’m sure someone will come along and say ‘phone 111’ any minute now but in most cases if you are aware of where your local walk in is and physically able to get there, you’re much better off just going.

26 miles is a pretty long way if you don't walk regularly. And that's talking as someone who ran London last year, and walked 75km the year before.

Thanks all. He survived the night but had a terrible fever. I think now that his calf muscle is just incredible right, making it bulge at the bottom. Trying to lure him into the foam roller today and will get him some physio this week if needs be.

At least he won't make the same mistake again.
