I am looking for a cheap step counter as I'm walking to help with rehabilitation after injury. I've been looking at omron and other brands but would appreciate recommendations.

If you have a smart phone download a health app which counts steps? E.g. Samsung health

LiliesAndChocolate · 17/04/2019 22:16

What about an app in your phone? There are many free and some such will calculate more accurately as using GPS

BloomedAgain · 17/04/2019 22:32

Thank you cestlavielife and liliesandchocolate. Great idea. I'll look into them.

If you are near a 'Decathlon' shop they have one for about £5 which counts steps, does Km and works fine. Very small, use in pocket/bag or attach to a keyring

Thank you MaitreKarlsson! I'll be near a branch this week so will get one.

Hi Bloomed
How did you get on? Did you buy one in the end?

Carriefrompreston · 24/04/2019 14:17

Remember, these are only a guide, especially if you are trying to work out how far you have walked....

BloomedAgain · 24/04/2019 14:47

Thanks both. I haven't yet managed to get to the store Maitre. I'm under specialist physio care and any walking at all Blush will be an improvement Carrie, so not too worried about complete accuracy.

I've got the Letscom fitness tracker from Amazon for about £20 after I lost my very expensive Fitbit Sad. It seems to do the job ok and the step number seems to match quite well to the pedometer built into my phone.

BloomedAgain · 27/04/2019 11:08

Thank you TheClaife I wouldn't trust myself with a fitbit! Just heard that Which have been testing trackers and finding mad discrepancies. Will be interesting to hear which devices performed best.

That the main running trackers (Strava, Runkeeper, even Garmin etc) can vary by up to about 10% is well known, and you can get very anomalous ones sometimes if signal hops around.

Pedometers are more reliable, because they're not attempting to assess your distance (though some will use an average stride length to convert to a rough approximation of a distance), they just counts the beats of movement (which is why you can spoof them when stationary by rhythmic arm movement , because that 'feels' the same to the sensor)

I have a free one on my phone, Pedometer++ (green icon with white walking figure on it) which is very straightforward and doesn't seem to impact on phone battery life.

Thank you AuntieStella. Will check out phone apps as well as basic pedometers.
