Over pronation

Hello, I’ve had my gait analysed and apparently I over pronate. It’s quite obvious when I see it actually...
Can anyone recommend running trainers for this? They didn’t really recommend any in the shop. They didn’t have much in there that weren’t mega expensive though tbh.

Are you on Run Mummy Run on Facebook? Just thinking you might get more suggestions than on here. Could be wrong though x

MrsMartinRohde · 06/04/2019 12:19

I overpronate and have worn and recommend Brooks Adrenaline GTS (don't have them now because the sizing doesn't work for me in the most recent versions), Hoka One One Arahi and Mizuno Wave Inspire. They're all good stability trainers. I also trialled the adidas Solar Glide ST Boost, which I liked but didn't buy.

AuntieStella · 06/04/2019 12:23

Road shoe?

How much cushioning do you like?

AuntieStella · 06/04/2019 12:33

I've a lot of friends running in Brooks Adrenaline. Asics also very popular (I think Kayano is the stability model)

Look for previous season's colours. Try online (remember to size up) in a shop like Wiggle or go somewhere which pricematches and/or has a long sale season and/or offers discount if you recycle an old pair of trainers with them (try a Runners Need)

Pinkstars2501 · 06/04/2019 12:45

I don’t have Facebook anymore.

Do you size up with all running trainers? I never have because I didn’t know tbh!
I like a good cushioned shoe. I will take a look at the suggestions, Thankyou all.

Yes, always size up by half to one size (as you do need that bit more space with repeated percussive motion)

If you like cushioned, try Hoka. I think the stability model is the Arahi.

Mizuno Wave (Inspire?) is also a reliably good one.

AwkwardSquad · 06/04/2019 13:04

You might find that your feet and legs ache if you wear corrective trainers or orthotics, until you get used to them. Wear them for short periods, building up to longer.

werekitty · 06/04/2019 13:04

I have asics gel foundation for the last 3 years which I find very comfortable. Definitely go up at least half a size.

kpnutts · 06/04/2019 13:06

I over pronate a lot too, went to running shop about a year ago to have my gait analysed. It felt like I tried on every shoe in the shop but came out with a pair of Brooke’s Vapor 4s. I have quite narrow feet and these keep everything supported - I’d really recommend them.

AuntieStella · 06/04/2019 13:08

If you wear orthotics the usual advice is to get a neutral trainer (otherwise it can be too much!)

mandybeesborough · 06/04/2019 13:10

I have Brooks GTS having previously had Asics and Saucony. Can’t remember which style. Love the Brooks having never worn them before. Asics and Saucony both good. Definitely used to be bargains to be had online.

mandybeesborough · 06/04/2019 13:11

Meant to add I overpronate.

Pinkstars2501 · 06/04/2019 13:23

Yeh she did say at the time to get insoles and just replace the footbed on my usual ones, I did because it was cheaper than buying trainers in a rush as it was due to close.
If that’s the same thing as buying a stability shoe then I’m happy to keep the ones I’ve got. If not then I’ll go with a recommendation.

Asics Gel Kayana here - lots of cushioning and stability. DH also wears them to support old knee injuries - we both buy at the outlet store near us as they often have great discounts on old season shoes. DH also sometimes buys on eBay (and sells on the ones he's only worn for 6 months, as that all he gets out of his).

MsMartini · 06/04/2019 15:53

I've used sportshoes.com because you can search for mild/moderate OP (for example) and get last year's season cheaply. Saucony and ASICS have both been good for me. I had my gait done again recently and I don't overpronate any more!

Shoefleur · 06/04/2019 15:56

Asics Gel Kayanos are the best for this. They’re on the pricey side but are really cushioned and super comfy.

BikeRunSki · 06/04/2019 16:05

I wear Brooks Adrenaline and custom orthotics, a size up. I’m a size 9 and prefer the men’s 9 to the women’s 9. I’ve also worn New Balance 860w in the past, but the style changed and I didn’t like it so much. I didn’t get on with the men’s version of these though, as they came too high up my Achilles’ tendon.

Don’t like Saucony, Mizuno too narrow. Addidas OK. Nike too narrow.

The thing about good running shoes is that they do cost a lot! But only about the cost of 2 sessions with a private physio!

Fififofum81 · 06/04/2019 16:09

Over pronation isn't something that needs 'fixed', unless you are actually getting pain from it. Our bodies are designed to naturally pronate, some more than others and in the case if the ankle often to stabilize other joints like the knee or the hip. If you do want to go for a support shoe Brooks Gts 19 is a good option as uses guiderails rather than a medial wedge so the support only comes in to affect when you really need it e.g. when legs getting more tired etc - kind of like having the bumpers up on a bowling alley!

Pinkstars2501 · 06/04/2019 20:13

Thankyou! Lots of suggestions for me.

I overpronate and wear Nike Zoom structures.

Also another tip is to take the model recommended and then look online as you can often get the same shoe much cheaper. Either a previous colour or a previous model which is still essentially the same shoe.

Eg Nike have just launched zoom structure 22 which are £100+ bit I have always worn structure 21 so now they are selling all these shoes cheap - I've picked up two pairs for £90.

bananapeanutbutterandtoast · 08/04/2019 07:56

Asics Gel Kayano are great. I get last year's colours a lot cheaper. Shop around and you can get them about half price, particularly if you have small feet.
The newer Kayanos are narrower so I go up half a size and they are just right.

Huntlybyelection · 27/07/2019 21:47

I over pronate.

I have wide feet and have found Brooks Adrenaline (men size) great along with Saucony Pro Grid Omni

The Asics Kayano were a really awkward fit on me - they rubbed my ankle bones.
