Whenever i do exercise I end up in pain!

I'll start by saying i am about 4 stone overweight and have been for about 7 or 8 years. I've exercised a fair bit in the past with no issues but in the last year or so I injure myself whenever I exercise. I'm not talking aching a bit the next day. I do follow instructors in classes etc to make sure I'm doing moves correctly but it still happens. In Jan I did yoga and after 4 sessions ended up with a pain in my right hip that is still there. I did parkrun on Saturday and ended up hobbling for days with pain in my foot and calf. Anytime I do weights even small I hurt by neck and shoulder. It's driving me mad and putting me off exercise. What could the issue be?

Impossible to tell online (unhelpful, I know)

Couid you go and see a physio? I think you probably do need a o-over with someone who knows what they're doing

In all honesty it could be the extra weight? I started exercising at the start of year (nothing intensive, just lifting some weights) and at the start of the year I was 4 stone overweight. I've only lost about a stone and a half since then but the difference is incredible. My knees dont hurt anymore, I can walk a lot further without my hips/knees hurting and I actually want to do a lot more.

If the goal is to lose weight, focus on your food intake for a month and see how a reduction in weight helps with the exercise?

It sounds like you’re pushing yourself too hard perhaps. When doing yoga, go for the easiest option, don’t compete. Ask the instructor for help with this. When you do parkrun, don’t run all the way. Build up gradually by doing a mixture of running and walking.

Thanks. I do wonder if it is a combination of the weight and age (I've just turned 40). I dont push myself too hard. I did walk/run the parkrun and it took 45 mins so I didn't feel I over did it. My trainers aren't the best though. For yoga again I wasn't overdoing it that I could tell. I think I hurt my hip in the warrior pose so I was just standing there! I think I'll see a physio to check im not falling apart. Thanks :)

Good idea to see a physio. Also, unless class instructors cue you properly and tell you precisely where to load your weight and what muscles you should feel it is pretty much impossible to be sure you are doing it right for your own build. I have been doing personal training for a couple of years now, but even so I Google the hell out of exercises to find the consensus view of how to do it properly. It's helped me a lot. Good sites for me have been Girls Gone Strong and GMB.
