Cheap and practical clothes to start running

I hate the way I look. When I met my now ExH (14 years ago) I was a fit size 12 and felt really good about myself. Far too much food and a 5 year old child down the line I'm now a size 18, can't jog for 10 yards without getting out of breath and have no energy.

An ex-colleague of mine has recently started running (she's got a very active and supportive family) and says she's now beginning to feel really good on it.

I'm starting to feel inspired. My problem is my DS as he's only with his dad 1 day a week but I'm unexpectedly not working at the moment so I might try doing some exercise!!

I have absolutely no idea where to start but I've heard good things about C25K so I'll download the app. What about clothes? I have no suitable trousers (jeans or PJ pants aren't going to help!) and no trainers as I'm living in my jodhpur boots.

What brands would be suitable? The trainers worry me most as I've 2 knee stabilisation operations and they severely hyperextend with no knee cap groove so they've got to be very supportive and cushioning.

How much roughly am I looking at? I don't want to get ripped off if I don't stick at this!!

Thanks

If you have knee issues and a previous coccyx fracture I’d say some pilates rather than yoga - yoga is so brilliant but it involves quite a lot of twisting around the pelvis area which really aggravates my sacroiliac joint issues and general coccyx/ pelvic issues. Pilates is more boring and some of the moves are similar, but it is a bit more limited range of motion and thus safer if you’ve had multiple issues. I say this as a great yoga lover btw!

Loads of great advice here do I won't repeat it but just to add

Go Slow! Whatever pace you think is comfortable to start with will be too fast... keep it very slow and easy and build up very gradually - then your joints will have a chance to keep up...

It takes 4-6 weeks for cardio improvements but 12 weeks for musclo skeletal system improvements

Good luck and enjoy it... and once you get started at parkrun, take your 5yo with his own barcode... once he walks/runs 20 times he can earn a t shirt Smile

Thank you all. Amazing advice. I really pleased I posted. Hopefully I'll be able to post some progress reports in a few weeks/months years

Sorry that should have been 10 times not 20...

And you get one after 50 runs too...

Hi OP

I’d like to reiterate how lovely and supportive runners are.

Park run is definitely a great way to work it into your routine so that DS is involved. Start by walking and add in more gentle runs each week.

Go slow and Good Luck Smile

Hello all. I downloaded the C25K app, got some decent running shoes etc and have just got back from my first attempt!!! I managed 8 x 60 second slightly faster than a walk runs.

Feel very sore proud of myself. Actually quite looking forward to Thursday now!!

Thanks for all your advice and help before!! X

Brilliant! You'll be amazed at how much easier the next runs are, and how you can build up your time. It's a great way to get into running.

I’m a bit late on the clothing advice, but anyway. I wanted high waisted bottoms and if you’ve got a Decathlon near you theirs were about £10 and are the best I’ve had! Nice high waist, I got the pink square pattern ones and they hide alllll my lumpy bits. The black nike ones I bought are shit, show everything no matter what size I tried.

Good luck on the running. I’m doing a half in May and not at all fast (genuinely think I’ll be last) and not really trained well enough so far due to work/life so 🤷🏻‍♀️
