Starting running from scratch

How do I do it?! Do I literally whack some trainers on and go for it? Are there any essentials I'll need (sports bra?).

I've never even run for a bus before. How long before I won't feel like I'm having a heart attack?

My DH (who fell runs) suggested something simple that I've found really helps -
Run a set route - mine is 2 miles, but you could start with 1.
And keep repeating it.
Don't worry how many times you stop and walk, just finish it all and keep a little eye on how you feel and how long it takes you.
Then do it again, and again.
And each time you'll notice you get a little further before you walk, run a little faster, and generally just get a sense of achievement from the tiniest increments.
It may seem boring, but i find it works.
Also, we're not talking about long runs here!! Not at the outset while you get your lungs up to speed.
Good luck!

Another fan of Couch to 5k. It also helps to have a goal you are working towards. Is there a 5k charity run (Cancer Research etc) you could do in about 10 weeks time? The NHS C25K plan takes 9 weeks and I found it really motivating to have an event to train for - at times that was the only thing that kept me going! I'm lazy, what can I say. Smile But the charity runs are really good fun too. Also, if you can team up with a friend and both train for the same run that would be even more motivating, but I appreciate that might not be an option.

I started couch to 5k this week (last week in fact but only managed one run thanks to snow and ice). So far so good, I haven't found it too hard to get going or stay motivated. As you mentioned large boobs I thought I'd let you know I bought this sports bra from Debenhams www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_150010202760_-1. I'd really recommend it - probably the best sports bra I've ever owned. Comfortable, very supportive and looks ok. My husband did a double take when I was wearing it because I looked so, erm, pert. Am thinking of swapping my normal bras for this one! I'm a 38FF if that helps gauge size.

Don't buy expensive headphones until you know how sweaty your ears get when running 😳ShockHmm

Right, fat girl problems. I carry my weight on my bum and thighs and when I run I'm finding my thighs really wobble and hurt. Will more supportive leggings help or do I just to get used to this?

Yes, running leggings and especially compression ones will help

Two sports bras.
Walking parkrun and building up to a jog/walk..

Wearing a Bra band has been essential to me over the top of a shock absorber ultimate run bra, with a large chest it’s the only thing that has allowed me to run upto HM. Good luck with C25k i did it 2.5yrs ago (mid-40s) and I’ve run around 2000km since.

Invest in good shoes and run slowly. No faster than 8minute kilometers.

At first you should be trying to build up stamina, not speed.

If you've a got a friend to run with, all the better.

And get a banging playlist to run to. The Archers omnibus is also good 😀

Thanks @CMOTDibbler

I'd say sign up to parkrun. Free 5k in your local park on Saturday at 9am. You can run or walk and people are really friendly and go for a coffee after so it's social and you can meet people to run with. If you can't run the whole thing, walk bits and slow down until you can run the whole thing. You will definitely not be last. There's a tail walker who comes last. There are often people pushing their Prams round and chatting at the back so honestly there is no pressure to race it. Just make sure you print out a free bar code off their website first.
