Charity 10k - tomorrow...HELP

kangashoe · 02/02/2019 21:56

So I’ve just been asked to take a charity 10k place for tomorrow as a friend is ill and has to drop out.
The issue is, I last ran 5k two and a half years ago!
Is this a terrible idea?

Yes it is, unless you want to walk it.

If you haven't trained then you will probably injure yourself.

CatnissEverdene · 02/02/2019 22:01

Yes, don't even contemplate it. No one should do this without substantial training for it.

nutellalove · 02/02/2019 22:04

Yes. You will likely injure yourself/ make yourself ill

VWpurse · 02/02/2019 22:09

Yep, don’t do it. Who asked you? It’s a ridiculous idea. Were they trying to set you up to fail?

You haven’t trained. It’s bloody cold. You probably haven’t even eaten the right things today.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/02/2019 22:13

Is it the winter run? You could probably just walk it.

Tatapie · 02/02/2019 22:13

Just jog / walk. You'll make it!

stinkypoo · 02/02/2019 22:16

Can you jog/walk it?

Unbearablecollies · 02/02/2019 22:16

Fairly dreadful idea! Doesn't she/he know someone who has run more recently?!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/02/2019 22:20

If it's the winter run it's fine Confused No matter what time she entered and was allocated you can drop right to the back and just walk/jog/run at your own pace

I have no idea what 'eating right' means - dh is running it and he ate Chinese food and chips for lunch Confused

Loads of people will be doing it slow - you can walk it in the three hours the course is open.

Unbearablecollies · 02/02/2019 22:22

Haha agree re eating right, it's only a 10k and op not hoping for a PB presumably!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/02/2019 22:36

Lol Grin - eating right is not compulsory- you know it's 6 miles right and not a marathon?

Dh will be round it in 50 minutes barely out of breath.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/02/2019 22:37

Please dont walk it. I marshal at several 10k and half marathons each year and it is awful to be stuck out on the course in freezing weather waiting for someone to finish 20.minutes after everyone else. I really font mind if someone has injured themselves and has to walk after that, but I really resent being stuck there because someone fancies a walk.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/02/2019 22:37

Yeah, he's not a 'new runner' - he's been running 40 years, 28 competitively.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/02/2019 22:39

If it's the London Winter Run the marshals wont be minding as there's lots of people running with cancer/running with disabilities

MuppetFamily · 02/02/2019 22:46

If you know that you could go out and walk/jog 5 miles tomorrow I would say go for it.

You know how fit you are, don't worry about breaking Olympic records. However if you know that you'd be out of breath walking to the end of the road then the sensible option would be to decline.

Mindthegapp · 02/02/2019 22:53

LaurieFairyCake

Well he sounds like one of the twats who boast they can eat or drink anything and still run. All clubs have them. Perhaps he’s the one at ours Grin

Zwischenwasser · 02/02/2019 23:09

I did this once, as a favour to a mate in a local running club.

It was OK, BUT I was 22 and incredibly fit from a summer season of an intensely physical job.

(Looks sadly at the middle aged wreck of a body I have now....)

Dont do it.

AuntieStella · 03/02/2019 13:04

What did you decide?

If it was the London Winter Run, it's absolutely fine to walk it - marshalls know they stay on the course until 12:00 as the start is staggered and walkers are welcome.

I heard they raise massive amounts, and that many of the participants are those who have or have had cancer.

kangashoe · 03/02/2019 14:28

It wasn’t the London winter one - but I did it! 1.5hrs, but I feel good!

Well done!

Hope you had fun, and that's a nice time

babbi · 03/02/2019 21:40

Well done !
I found this as I came on here to ask about a 10 k !
I did the c25k before Xmas ... first time I have run since HIgh School ...

I was thinking about entering our local 10 k in September .... do you think it’s possible?
I’m in my fifties ... if so can anyone point me in the direction of a sensible training plan for an elderly runner please ?

TIA

AuntieStella · 04/02/2019 08:04

Yes, it's definitely possible. I'm in my 50s and went from non-runner to regular runner.

There is plenty of time to train for a longer distance by September (going from 5k to 10k was easier than going from non-runner to 5k)

I don't remember using a particular plan. I was running about 3x a week and doing a weekly Pilates class, and just made some of the runs longer - I added an extra 5 mins every week (or two, depending on how it was going)

babbi · 04/02/2019 18:27

Thanks AuntieStella ... and congratulations to you .. fantastic achievement..

I’m going to grit my teeth and go for it !!

Worse that can happen is that I get fitter by training.. even if I get too scared to try the race 😂
Will combine with Yoga and Pilates to help the aching aged body 🙄😩
