Wanting to start using weights

Hi there

I am wanting to start using weights but feel intimidated at the weights section of the gym as I haven’t a clue what I’m doing.

The gym very much focuses on personal training, which you have to pay for and I just can not afford it. There are a couple of classes that run where they use weights but its only in for half an hour, and I can’t get to many of the classes.

Does anyone have any tips of any websites etc I can look at to help me?

Most PT will do a free taster session to see if they’re style suits you

I started using the free weights just before Christmas. I asked an instructor to show me how to use them. I have been doing barbell classes on and off for years so now able to incorporate some of that workout into my weights sessions. I actually enjoy it far more than using the weights machines!

Thanks. I did ask at the gym if the PT did free tasters or if they could show me what to do but they said I would have to pay for block lessons.

There are loads of YouTube tutorials about technique, how often you should train etc.
I've seen people use their phone in the gym for advice or to follow a workout.

If you're paying gym membership and they won't show you how to use the machines unless you book PT sessions, I'd seriously change gyms! I use a local leisure center and although you can book PT sessions, staff are more than happy to show you how to use the machines. It's the least anyone can expect when you're paying to use the facilities!

I second YouTube.

Try hasfit or fitness blender. Both have a wealth of videos of every type of workout (hiit, strength building, circuits, arm focused etc) of all different lengths and suitable for every level.

Look up starting strength- barbell training- Mark Rippitoe.
The only 4 techniques you need to learn are
Overhead press- bench press- squat and deadlift.
Find a good trainer to teach you and make sure you are doing it properly.

I have used fitness blender dumbbell workouts for years at home and they really stood me in good stead for working out in the gym now.
