Right, after noticing just how wobbly my stomach area is in a changing room mirror yesterday I've decided it's time to take some action. I'm short with slim arms, legs and bum but BMI 24 due to a rather wide and wobbly middle-section. I eat quite well but have been eating too many chocolates, crisps etc over the festive period. Exercise wise I'm pretty lazy and other than long weekend walks I do no formal exercise. I know from past experience that exercise is what I need to focus on to change my shape. Dieting is not sustainable for me. I'm not keen to join a gym at present as realistically I'd only manage 2 visits a week due to childcare, work etc. What I need to know is what types of exercise I can do from home that will make a real difference e.g. YouTube classes, exercise bike, weights etc. What has worked for you?

Hi, I'd recommend couch to 5k the One You app (it's the NHS one). It's brilliant and gets you out of the house.

You Tube wise, 30 Day Shred, Pilates, yoga. Just search, experiment. See what catches your eye.

It's not just about exercise tho. You need to combine it with a healthy eating plan.

Jessica Smith is very good and there's so many videos to choose from.

I started partly because my local gym closed and I wasn't hugely convinced it would be good (on top of running though) but it has been really good. I still miss the cross trainer, but yes...it's good!

I'd recommend taking a look at Jessica Smith TV on Youtube. She has hundreds of vids with all different styles in. I do something from her range every day.

For a quicker result, I have gone onto a 16:8 style eating plan which suits my lifestyle but I don't worry too much about it; as my muscle tone has gone up, diet has been less important from a maintenance point of view.

Joe Wicks HIIT is awesome. Only need 15 minutes for a workout.

definitely go on Youtube, loads of videos. Find a programme that suits you.

Highly recommend fitnessblender.com, they have loads of videos of various types and lengths and for different fitness levels

The most effective way I found was to do a bit of lots of things. I get bored doing the same thing all the time.
Some form of HIIT
If you have a turbo trainer something like Sufferfest or Swift.
Running
Yoga

And diet.... Reduce your calorie intake. It is too easy to overestimate your calorie burn from exercise and underestimate the amount you eat.

I'd get some weights, you get a lot done in a small time compared to cardio. An 8kg kettlebell, then youtube kettlebell exercises. Strength training is brilliant for women and does a lot to create lean muscle strengthen your bones etc. I love it.

Thanks everyone, there are some great responses here.
Just to clarify the; diet. I know it's really important and I do generally follow a healthy balanced diet but have been a bit slack of late. I just mean I don't want to follow any specific diet plans - calorie counting, low carb, paleo etc as I don't find them sustainable after a few weeks and prefer to eat the same as the rest of the family (possibly smaller portions).
Definitely going to try the YouTube videos and weights.
Had also been wondering about buying an exercise bike but no one has mentioned home gym equipment.

You don't need much to work out at home. Trainers and a mat.

YouTube offers loads and loads of different workouts for free. You can choos a quick 10 min session when you're pressed for time and a longer one when you're not.

Things like exercise bikes are white elephants, unless you really reallylike stationary cycling, you'll get bored very quickly. Also, cycling won't help with upper body toning.

I doubt most people can really justify the room for home gym equipment, also machines can be quite limited, compared to a couple of dumbbells and a kettlebell which you can use for all sorts of different exercises for different parts of the body.

You can't beat Davina's first exercise DVD (Power of Three) that she did in about 2004

Its great for an all round work out and very easy to follow
