Winter running gear

I run about 30 K a week (over 3 or 4 sessions) and find it so uncomfortable in this weather as I'm freezing at first and then so very once I get warmed up. I currently have a a cheapo long sleeve running top from Wiggle and start with that and a running jacket from lidl whihc I take off half way through and tie around my waist or put in a backpack. Then I find that I am somehow simultanesious hot and cold (and somehow prickly). Is my problem that I'm not using "good" gear?

Both were bought ages ago when I was getting into running and didn't want to spend loads when I didn't know if it would take but this is my third winter of struggling, so happy to spend if my problem will be solved. Would a nice merino top solve my issues?

Does anyone have gloves that they can recommend? I use some glove liners from decathlon which aren't bad really, but I do take them off half way.

I know what you mean about too hot and too cold together! I have built up a range of stuff over the last few years and mix and match according to the weather. On cold days I wear my winter tights to keep my bum warm. I often wear a gilet and wear a t shirt with separate sleeves. So if my body is warm but my arms are cold I can take off the gile to, but if my arms are warmer I can take the sleeves off without losing body heat. For long sleeved tops I have Ronhill ones which aren't excessively expensive, especially if bought from my favourite cheaper website, sportsshoes.com! I haven't tried merino tops but have heard good things about them. My gloves are from Ronhill too but I think most people usually remove their gloves at some point during a run unless it's really cold.

Thanks for the link to that website -- I need some news shoes so will look for some bargains there.
Tell me more about these shirts with detachable sleeves though. I've never seen anything like that

I wear SS shirts & separate sleeves (like here, cyclists use them a lot too).
Keeping my ears, chin, sinuses are key to keeping all of me warm. Plus all skin potentially covered.

Yes those are the sort of sleeves I meant, mine are from Decathlon.

Those are very cool - can't believe I've never seen them before. Off to go have a looksie

Decathlon is great if you have one near. They have light, windproof/ shower proof layers.
Most of the winter, I like their fingerless cycling gloves.
Fleece lined leggings.

I find starting with a light layer all over is helpful. Buffs are great for the neck/ face/ ears.

Warming up inside is good on a cold day which at least keeps the muscles warm. I deal with the cold skin after with a warm shower, gradually increasing the temperature.

If you run when it's dark, I've just bought these reflective, warm running leggings from Decathlon. They are amazing!

DH has a fab running jacket from Proviz. It lights up like the leggings, above :)

fruitpastille · 10/01/2019 18:16

I don't have anything fancy but currently I'm ok with 3 thin layers. Long sleeve then short sleeve t shirt with a hi vis top over them. All sports direct stuff. For hands I wear those wrist warmers things and tuck my fingers in until I warm up. I also wear a buff and a baseball cap.

PopGoesTheWeaz · 10/01/2019 18:46

Silly question maybe, but how do you carry layers when you take them off mid run?

The them around my waist usually. Some people shove things into a backpack.

I have also sewed elastic tags onto my gloves and detachable sleeves. I keep clips attached to my running belt. Then I can remove gloves / sleeves / headband / hat as required and clip to my belt.

Tie*

My gilet has quite big pockets, they fit my gloves and sleeves. If I am out for a run over 10 mile stay I take my Innov8 waist pack, it has tons of storage room. Sometimes I borrow dh's flip belt, must get one of my own!

BikeRunSki · 10/01/2019 19:16

I use a cycling jacket with a big pocket in the back to carry things.

Once it gets to below 0, i tend to wear a merino wool top, thin fleece, wind/water resistant jacket, long leggings, merino socks, Buff.

When the weather is warmer, I don’t have a fleece, and have shorter sleeves, shorter leggings, cooler socks, no Buff.

lljkk · 10/01/2019 20:30

Stuff things in my bra or carry in hands items.

fruitpastille · 10/01/2019 22:39

I keep all my layers on but they are quite thin. Buff can go round my wrist if I'm too warm.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/01/2019 21:33

Where do you run?

I have layers but do a short 1 mile loop near home then chuck unwanted layers in the porch then carry on. I've also draped a layer in a bush on a circular route and picked it up at the end!

I love a fleece headband and have a running belt for water / phone that I tuck gloves into.

Cycling shorts over leggings keep bum / thighs warm.

Deep heat roll on is good too.
