Running and being shattered

I've recently done couch to 5k. Am entered into a 5k next weekend. Why am I so shattered after running? I'm not fast!

Probably hydration

Get some water and electrolytes down you!

I've done running on and off for years, but have had to re-start from scratch a few times when I haven't run for a long time. Each time I've found that exhaustion kicks in after about a month - once I can go out and do more running than walking. It then takes another 2/3 months before my body gets used to it and I feel energised rather than tired. Extra drinks and food help, especially high protein foods seem to give me a boost, also doing other types of exercise to strengthen my body - weights, core exercises, etc. But it might just be that your body is getting used to the greater level of activity - hopefully in a few weeks you'll reap the benefits and start feeling much more energetic.

Running can be quite hard on the body and may make e.g. anaemia worse. If the fatigue continues, maybe get some blood tests at GPs?

Are you re-fuelling properly OP? Chocolate milk is good as it replaces lost sugars/protein etc. Also orange squash with a pinch of salt? Sounds gross but is actually quite tasty!

Make sure you are well hydrated all the time, not just on run days. And refuel with protein and some sugar after running and try to get plenty of sleep to recover well. Good luck with your 5k!
