Running clothes for winter

I’ve been running a bit more recently and have entered a race next year. Going to need decent waterproof kit for training. I need a waterproof jacket for running, ideally not a bright yellow one but coloured. I could probably do with a second base layer and thermal leggings but not urgent.

I’ve seen a few on decathlon which are very cheap - are they very plasticy / good quality? Sorry - I like Sweaty Betty and lululemon (on sale) which fit well, feel nice and are flattering but not a fan of their prices! I’m trying not to buy stuff for the sake of it and am on a budget.

I'm watching and waiting for a Lululemon sale. Nothing yet! Grin I have one of their "define" jackets. Love love it. But not waterproof...

You could have a look on sportsshoes.com for jackets; waterproof running jackets can be very sweaty. Mine is an Innov8 stormshell and it's brilliant, not very cheap though. I have Ronhill winter leggings, I have also heard good things about the ones decathlon sell. Most of my running stuff is Ronhill, it lasts well.

I'd definitely stick with SB for leggings at least, I LOVE them. I think for a waterproof I'd go cheap (although I don't run that much, I've never bothered with waterproofs - and extra layer I don't want once I get going.).

LS tops I've found are much of a muchness - I've got a Gap and Ronhill one, they're both fine.

But yes, SB (and Lululemon, but I've never found their prices palatable), have consistently been excellent for me - leggings, bras, tops. The only thing that's been disappointing has been a sweatshirt - it developed holes really quickly.

Thanks. I picked up a jacket from sportsshoes and then a couple of other bits fell into my basket 😂

I love Lululemon leggings and prefer them to SB. I too am awaiting a sale. Smile

Have a look on wiggle. They have a wide range of running things. I brought a base layer from mountain warehouse which is one of my favorite tops in the winter for running.

Decathlon running gear is very good - I have loads of it.

Look for 2XU windproof running tights when they are on offer (far too expensive at full price, but seriously good for winter running).

And if you can stomach the reported ethics of Sports Direct, Karrimor running clothes are extremely good. Jackets are a bit eye-wateringly bright, though you can sometimes find blue ones.

Check cycling jackets too, as they're good for running in

TKMaxx often has a reasonable selection of base layers and thermal tights (can't remember brand as it's one usually sold in mainland Europe, but look out for black winter weight ones with shocking pink accent/flashes as they are good and warm)

I can’t comment on their winter gear but about six months ago I signed up to Fabletics for their welcome offer and got some clothes really cheap (leggings and top). You have to subscribe to a monthly delivery when you sign up but I cancelled no problem. The clothes are brilliant! The leggings are the best I’ve ever had, wash well and are super flattering. I’m so happy with them I am considering asking DH to sign up and get some stuff for me again. So maybe worth checking out their winter gear?

Decathlon are very good for the price. I think you may find the waterproof is not used very much. I tend to sweat madly in waterproofs and get more uncomfortable than if I was out in the rain! Most running gear dries out quickly and sometimes a light shower can be really refreshing.

(That said I am not very hardy about going out in a downpour! I tend to wait for it to blow over!)

Another vote for Decathlon. I think their quality is fine. Also Aldi/Lidl. I tend to only buy expensive trainers (big fan of Saucony and La Sportiva for running shoes as they fit me really well) and expensive sports bras (for me, Bravissimo). Everything else, I honestly don't think it makes that much difference and for leggings, socks and base layers I often find that the cheaper versions wash better and consequently last longer.

I like Sweaty Betty for summer gear but am a big Decathlon convert for winter running, I’d also agree with PP about waterproof stuff and sweating. DD and I both have one of these jackets, keeps a reasonable shower off but is normal material and so not sweaty. Link
