Yoga doesn't count as weight bearing

Does it?

I need to incorporate some weight bearing into my patchy fitness regime but I'm a cardio girl (slow running, low impact hiit) who likes a bit of yoga.

What can I do at home? Caveat with my normal v dodgy knee issue. It's only for health reasons I'm considering it btw. Not aesthetics.

Many types of yoga use your own body weight to train you it's a lengthening workout for you muscles. Using external weights is a shortening exercise imo.

You are bearing your own body weight which is strengthening. It doesn't burn many calories in the session, but you can feel the after burn in your muscles the next day!

I think it depends how rigorous your yoga practice is - there's definitely scope for there to be plenty of weight bearing stuff, but some of it is quite advanced.

But there's still plenty you can do at home: press ups, planks, squats, lunges, if you buy some dumbbells or resistance bands, you'll be able to expand that repertoire. Maybe take a look at some Fitness Blender videos to get some ideas?

Yes it does. You are holding your weight for extended periods

Your running and Interval training are weightbearing activities- swimming, cycling etc are what you would describe as non weightbearing activities.

I bought some weights off Amazon for £25. Brilliant stuff, would definitely recommend that.

Depends on the yoga
Vinayasa Flow / Ashtanga / Power Yoga can be seriously weight bearing
because you are loading up one limb at a time for several minutes
and I drip with sweat by the end of the class even with the aircon on

Jojoanna · 11/12/2018 20:59

I really wanted to do yoga but it was too hard for my body dodgy knee back etc ,, disappointed

Yoga and running are both weight bearing for the purposes of bone density. They dont build muscle to the extent that lifting weights will, so it depends why you want to add strength work.

Couldn't you just do body weight exercises such as push-ups, chin ups/pull ups, and squats?
