Looking for some guidance....

I love running BUT I'm not very good at it and I am VERY slow. Regularly run 5k (37mins ).

There is a 10 mile run in February which I have always said one day I will do it. It's approx 14 weeks away. Am I being unrealistic in think I could be fit enough to run it at a reasonable time by then??

Thanks

14 weeks is a good amount of time to prepare, especially if you can run regularly and follow some sort of training plan. Does the race have a cut off time? Some don’t, but others do, and it’s always worthwhile checking so that you know the minimum speed you have to achieve. Doing more running/longer runs generally should increase your fitness and speed , but if you add in some speed work such as intervals you should definitely get faster! Are you a member of a club?

37 minutes isn't terribly slow for 5k. I agree re checking about cut off times. That aside, 14 weeks is plenty of time. You can just plan to gradually increase your mileage and sessions like intervals or hill repeats will help with speed. Also check what the route of the race is like, so if it is hilly for instance, you need to regularly run some hills in training. Go for it!

Definitely achievable. You probably need to train up to 8 miles and adrenaline should carry you through.

Try including some different training rather than just ramping up the distance, some interval training - hill sprints or fartlek will improve your speed and distance.

Good luck!

Yeah go for it op! What's the furthest you can/do run atm? If it's 5k, then you need to build up week by week till you are comfortably doing 12-14k (10 miles is 16k). That's totally doable in 14 wks. Yy check the cut off - but at a, 10k I did this year it was 2hrs I think so I imagine you would be fine. Good luck!

there's a 5k to 10k plan following on from couch to 5k, think it's 10 weeks.

Thanks for replies.

I just checked last years results and the slowest time is 2:16. It doesn't mention a cut off time.

I'm not a member of a club but I would love to be. The local club meets in the evenings and saturdays which are hard for me to go to because of the kids.

During the summer I ran my first official 5k and came very last but my time was 36min which I was delighted with.

I used to run a lot more a few years ago and very comfortable running 10k (still at a slow pace). I think o could run 6/7k now comfortably enough. My regular route is hilly at times but I need to start a bit of cross training.

I'm off now to sign up. Thanks for giving me the confidence!!

14 weeks is plenty of time, use it wisely.

SocksRock · 03/11/2018 14:04

Yes 14 weeks is plenty. If you increase your distance by 10% per week you will easily do it.

AnotherPidgey · 03/11/2018 14:34

It's achievable. 10 miles is my favourite distance as it is more of a long distance challenge than 10k (6.2 miles) but not as draining as a half marathon.

37 minutes isn't particularly slow for a 5k, it is a mainstream time. When on a standard training run with rough ground/ traffic/ stiles, I run 5k in 45 mins, but can do a 10 mile race in 1:40-1:50 depending on terrain.

There are training plans for 10 miles out there although less than HMs. You could train from 5k to HM in 12 weeks, so 14 for 10 miles is definitely achievable Smile

Do it do it do it!!!!!! But train carefully, don’t do too much too soon. Find a beginners training plan to guide you but don’t feel like you have to follow it to the letter.

Happytot · 03/11/2018 14:49

I have signed up!

I am so excited and nervous. I have found a beginner training plan over 12 weeks.

I was thinking of doing the 30 day shred 2 days a week as my cross training. Would that be ok??
