Keeping running fitness with broken arm

Rungirlrunning · 23/10/2018 23:23

As title suggests I've broken my arm and am meant to be training for a bloody marathon in April with a half just booked & paid for February . I can't afford a gym so cross trainers etc are out but could probably borrow a turbo trainer for my bike. Will be doing lots of walking but don't want to throw away all my intentions of building core strength and completely lose my running capacity.
I normally run 3 x a week 8-10km and swim or cycle once a week.

Sorry to hear this, so rubbish :(

Can you do walking resistance training in the pool keeping your arm out of the water? Turbo also a great idea.

Might it be worth seeing a physiotherapist (just one session) and asking for recommendations for lower body isometric exercises that could strengthen core and lower body?

Thanks physio might be a good idea and sadly water is out as I can't risk getting it wet (& can't hold it up for very long!)

Why can't you still go jogging? I know I probably would.

I swam when I broke my arm. Got a cast cover.

I also ran and just trained normally - if a little carefully!

I used one of those sit-up exercise bikes at the gym when I broke my collarbone a few years ago, and then when I was feeling a bit less fragile I did lots of walking in the pool, and then on the treadmill/up and down hills outside as fast as I could without actually running. I didn't have a cast though, just a sling.

When I started running again, I was surprised about how quickly I got back into it in terms of speed and distance. I've never done a marathon though - only halves.
