Would regular exercise really give me more energy?

I have a 2yr old DS & work 2-3 days per week. I'm the normal amount of tired - knackered after work & hate the early mornings DS imposes on me.

Would regular exercise give me more energy? I have a home gym but only DH uses it.

I think so yes. I was surprised at how much more energy I had and how much better I felt doing regular exercise. It has slipped a lot recently and it’s hard to get motivated to do it again I have been caught in the I cane be bothered I’m too tired trap but logically know I feel much better after I’ve done it. I also find I’m more productive after I’ve done some exercise too. I’m less likely to sit down and slob and more likely to tackle some housework or catch up on some jobs I’ve been ignoring.

I drive dd to an activity feeling exhausted, then got to the gym and pick her up feeling exhilerated. So yes.

But I would qualify that yes by saying that more sleep and uninterrupted sleep at night would probably help more, just not possible for you right now. It will be one day though, hold on.

I do a run every morning after dropping the children at school. Sometimes a short 5km, sometimes a long run.

I like it being part of my day and feel fit and healthy having done it. But I wouldn't say it gives me more energy than I'd have if just went home and drank a cup of coffee instead.

Only if you are very sedentary. Otherwise you will feel more weary: not lethargic, but weary.

The ketogenic diet has given me more consistent energy than anything else I've ever experienced. I sleep really well and get no mid afternoon/post work slumps. While there are loads of benefits to exercise, other than some immediate endorphins sometimes, I've never noticed a consistent uplift in energy.

The thing I notice is more is my joints are more sprightly when I exercise. At the moment they're creaky AF.

I have more get up and go. I wouldn't say energy... I'd use the word motivation. I'm still just as fucking tired 😂😂 but my body is more able to cope with the demands of the day if I'm exercising.

Agreed, I feel more motivated to do other stuff when I'm done, and it does make me feel better overall. But my children are now much older - it wasn't quite so straightforward when they were young.

Yes, I normally have to drag my arse to the gym, and come out feeling on top of the world.
Do it.

TyrionLannistersShadow · 19/09/2018 09:30

Not for me personally but I'm one of those odd people that doesn't ever feel better after exercise. I do it because I have to but it leaves me feeling tired and down afterwards.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 22/09/2018 18:08

I think so yes. I've been going regularly to the gym for the last few months and have a lot more energy. I get quite twitchy if I sit around and don't do something.

I have a medical condition and take meds with a side effect of tiredness. It doesn’t strike all the time, but can be extreme sometimes.

Running regularly makes an enormous and positive difference. Even when I have to really force myself out of the door.

So my experience is that it definitely does. And I think there’s a reasonable body of research that shows that’s a normal and very common outcome.

As you have a home gym, how about having a trial? Could you find 20-30 mins for 3 or 4 days a week and keep that up for a couple of months and see how you feel?

Lifeismorethanamerrygoround · 23/09/2018 12:52

I don't know about feeling energetic for the rest of the day after exercise, I usually workout hard and wear myself out. But I do think that I generally feel stronger and fitter, I walk fast and can do more. So in that way I am more energetic I suppose
