Running after plantar fasciitis?

Has anyone managed to get back to running after plantar fasciitis? wondering if there is hope for me ...

Doing NHS physio but any useful tips gratefully received.

I had severe plantar fasciitis and stopped running in November 2017 (non-weight bearing at that point). I am just up to running 5km this month. Physio, night splints, ice bottle rolling, stretching etc did nothing. Not running did give slow steady improvement, but what made a massive improvement was shockwave treatment. Really recommend it.

Also, having never cycled in my life, I took up indoor cycling on Zwift to keep fit while not running and then started cycling outside too. Love it.

Good luck.

I've spoken to many who have returned to running... they each had a different paths back, no clear solution.
What exercises are you doing with the physio?

BlueChampagne · 28/08/2018 12:44

Well done Normanprice! I'm on standard NHS physio achilles stretching exercises at the moment (heel drops and the like).

Also planning to do more cycling, but running used to fit really well as I could run between school and work.

The only thing that worked for me was insoles. In all shoes, all the time. Now I am back to running with no problem.

Please can you post a link Wiifitmama?

I can't put a link as Amazon shows my details. But it was these:

I’ve just gone back to running regularly after having plantar issues for a year!! It’s still a bit sore but nowhere near as bad and I ran 15 miles on Sunday and was able to walk on getting out of bed on Monday.
What worked for me is hard to pin down. It seems to have been a combination of stretches, ice, insoles and a night splint. I’ve recently bought a small foam roller which seems to be keeping it at bay now and I use it most night watching the television.

This is the roller. I’ve ordered one for the other foot as well so I can do both at the same time.

I wear fitflops at all times. Has helped soooo much.

For me I think it's been about time, rest, strengthening exercises for the feet and possibly also the use of supportive footwear and custom insoles. But I think it's been mostly about time and building up strength. I still feel twinges when I overdo it but a year after I had to stop running completely, I'm now able to run up to 10k regularly, even daily if I don't do too much else. Am always very conscious and careful though, maybe too much. I do a lot of stretching and other types of exercise as well as running, so I'm not doing too much high impact activity, and I don't race at all. It's worth it to be able to run pain free.

Thank you for the links, suggestions, and giving me hope!

I'm a middle aged runner with middle aged running friends we've all had it at some point. The severity and length of lay off varies but I don't know anyone who hasn't got back to running eventually.

I was out for a year but the things that made most difference were lots of ice (20 mins 3/4 times a day) calf stretching (10/12 times a day) and really firm rolling on a wooden rolling pin several times a day. Doing the rolling and stretching before you get up in the morning makes a huge difference.
