Bleeding boobs! Running bra needed...

Please can long distance (ish) runners recommends running bras. I’ve been a casual runner for years, and have been fine wearing a regular sports bra and using body glide for chafing. However, I’ve now upped my milage, and after the 7 mile point have to stop because I the material has rubbed under my boobs to such an extent that they’re bleeding. They’re a right mess at the minute (think cuts and scabs) and having a shower post run is agony.

I know I should stop running and let the wounds heal, but I’ve set a target for this month that I’m adamant I’ll meet.

There must be some great seamless bras with good support out there - which do you recommend?

Stupid questions but...

What bra are you currently wearing?

Have you measured yourself to make sure you have the right size?

Verbena87 · 09/08/2018 08:56

Moving comfort was my best sweaty distance bra, and if you’re not too big of boob the Nike pull on crop top type ones are good.

Now I’m breastfeeding (so much bigger boobs) I’ve got a great big underwired job from panache but my stupid pelvic floor is stupid and I can no longer run proper distances so can’t comment on how chafey it is.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/08/2018 09:07

Tkmaxx has a great selection in my local store, I got two new balance ones that are like cropped tops the other day. They are seamless and incredibly comfortable.

Also, I’ve been very impressed with primark’s one too, again like a cropped Top with cups. I think it was £4 or something ridiculous like that.

I don’t have particularly heavy boobs though despite being a D or DD cup, not sure if they would work for you as you don’t mention your size.

Jaimx86 · 09/08/2018 09:29

I’m only a C cup but as I do weights for my chest twice a week the muscles get really sore if my boobs move too much so I like to have them completely strapped down!

I’m currently wearing H&M ones as I like the colours (style over comfort, I know!) but have a New Balance one coming from TK Maxx today - glad to see you recommend, averagebear .

I hadn’t heard of Moving Comfort before, but they look great! I need to make an investment, I think, if I’m going to pursue this properly.

I use shock absorber ultimate run bras and not had any problems with them. They are a but more expensive but sometimes you can get them cheaper online, on sites like wiggle or sportsshoes.com

Verbena87 · 09/08/2018 10:33

Try on shock absorbers; I find the sizes are really small (when I was running regularly, my normal bras were 30 band size and my shock absorber was a 34). I chafe easily and found they had too many seams and plastic bits for 10 miles +.

Boobydoo is a good website and I think you can email them for advice.

FATEdestiny · 09/08/2018 14:41

It sounds to me like you have an ill-fitting bra.

The problem may not be the type or style of bra, if it's too loose around the chest it will move and so rub on your skin.

Redcrayons · 09/08/2018 14:53

Maybe get fitted for one. I’ve got a shock absorber and never had any problems. It’s pretty tight and doesn’t move.

I’ve never suffered with chafing, whether that’s because of the bra or because I’ve got rhino skin I don’t know.

dangermouseisace · 09/08/2018 20:03

I always have shock absorber run bras. They are pricey but boobs stay put, they’ve got 2 layers and I find them really comfortable. Most women I run with have them too (can tell from the straps!). I’ve done marathon training and never had any upper body chafing. If you try them on in a shop you can get them from wiggle cheaper...

Jaimx86 · 09/08/2018 21:55

You might have a point about size, FATE, as my up in mileage also conincided with around a stone in weight loss, so it could be that the material is now too lose and therefore moving more.

I used to wear the Shock Absorber crops with inbuilt bras when I was a small chested teen, and always liked the quality so will try some on.

I've just bought another ShockAbsorber one as it's much better than my 'other' running bra (am M&S one I think), so much so that my other one now doesn't feel supportive enough! I've got mine from Amazon and there's some good deals on them.

AuntieStella · 09/08/2018 22:02

Go to a shop for Shockabsorbers, or somewhere with a really good returns policy, as their sizing is idiosyncratic (I needed wider in the back and smaller in the cup than any other brand) but once you know which of their size fits, you can order from anywhere as their idiosyncrasies run true across the brand.

I have a general sports style from them, a general running one and a twinskin running one (Wiggle had them on offer....) and I've been very happy with them, even in the recent hot and sweaty patch.

cherrytree63 · 08/10/2018 10:58

I run in my Shock Absorbers, I have other brands but they don't give enough support for running.
Ditto going up at least one if not two band sizes.
I have the classic style with 2 back straps, I tried the ultimate but I'm not flexible enough to do up the clasp on the top strap lol!

eatpuddingdrinkwine · 09/10/2018 10:20

I have this exact problem too. I wear a shock absorber but unless brand new I get the bleeding at the front I now put that kinesiology tape under my straps before running

GinIsIn · 09/10/2018 10:24

Always shock absorber here. I have run half marathons regularly in them without a bit of chafe and I'm a G cup!

Imnotreadyforthis · 11/10/2018 06:33

Also recommend shock absorber! I run lots of hm and done 2 30ks and thr only time I’ve chafed was with a bra that had got slightly loose after losing weight. I use the active multi sports support and I find it great.

Bodear · 11/10/2018 06:40

Me too!!! I was going to post this same thread. Currently using shock absorber but have scars front and back having just done a HM. I’m an F/FF. I’ll read the thread properly now but I was so excited it’s not just me I had to post! Grin

Veterinari · 11/10/2018 06:50

Shock absorber here too. I wear my usual size though and whilst the band is tight, this is what offers the support. I’d be wary of upsizing for comfort and increasing the risk of chafing

CalmConfident · 13/10/2018 11:46

Panache user here - love em. Bravissimo were great at fitting my wayward boobs Grin

megletthesecond · 13/10/2018 12:44

Shock Absorbers are worth it.
I'm small of boob but I also layer a Primark sports top over the top. Nothing moves.
