On Friday I started at the gym - feeling very positive, great PT.
Today I'm supposed to go but I'm still so sore!
Should I go or rest?

Definitely go. After my first PT session I was in so much pain I cried when I sneezed! It took a week to feel better but I exercised through it and felt better for it.

Butternutsqoosh · 29/07/2018 08:15

No pain, no gain!!

Branleuse · 29/07/2018 08:16

You have the DOMS
Id waitfor it to pass tbh. Your muscles are repairing. It wont happen every time, its just because youre new to it.

LaGattaNera · 29/07/2018 09:13

Go but tell PT and they will adapt etc and make sure they do the right kind of stretch to help. You will probably feel better for getting moving again. Enjoy.

AuntieStella · 29/07/2018 09:16

I'd go - partly just to keep in the habit of going.

Explain to the PT about your level of soreness. If any good, s/he will be able to tailor a gentle stretchy workout for you today. And perhaps instruct in the use of a foam roller,

Polly99 · 29/07/2018 09:18

Definitely go. Once you warm up the pain will go, and then get your PT to stretch you properly at the end and to show you how to use a foam roller.
Pick up some Epsom salts on the way home.

It ultimately depends.
I never would because i think its the fastest way to make exercise unenjoyable which defeats the object of a lifestyle change.

I always found that having protein within an hour of exercising reduced DOMS as protein is what repairs muscles, so something like a hard boiled egg or a bit of chicken, or even a glass of milk would reduce the chance of next day soreness.

I think in general its ok to workout through a bit of pain once you get to know your limits, but advising a new exerciser to ignore pain in their body is not great. Its ok to rest your muscles and build up your strength gradually. Your muscles will not react like this after every session, but the first couple can be hardcore. I remember barely being able to sit down

LockedOutOfMN · 29/07/2018 09:31

Stretch well before and after every session.

Stay well hydrated throughout the day.

Try to eat some protein as soon as you finish exercising - I tend to eat a small can of tuna but I appreciate that's not appetising for everyone! A small bag of unsalted nuts is easy to take to the gym and scoff in the changing rooms or as you leave. Or you could drink milk, eat a hardboiled egg or a portion of chicken or turkey.

Take a cool shower after exercising and also point the shower head with a spray of cold water at your large muscle groups or those you've been working hardest, always including calves, quads and bum.

Taking Magnesium citrate post workout has made a massive difference for me.

I went! I conquered! 💪🏻

Well done! I always try to do something when I have DOMS, definitely it helps the creaky muscles.

ragged · 01/08/2018 17:37

Good for you. :)

babycham75 · 01/08/2018 17:52

Thanks!
Lost my confidence a bit today.
I needed to ask how to use a bit of equipment- felt unable to for some reason.
Bit intimidated by the others today.
Just a blip I know, but I guess my confidence will grow xx

DS worked in a gym, gave him a job to show folk how to use the equipment.
No embarrassment in not knowing something. Often shame in being able to admit to it, though.
