50 year old seeks toned bum

Long time MN user and serial name changer here!! Will you indulge me as I have started this thread as a kind of motivational diary for myself and hopefully to get some support and advice from the collective wisdom on this wonderful site.

So I have just turned 50, am 5’9, weigh 10 stone 4, body fat is 23%. Last year I was 11 stone 3 but with mindful eating, the couch to 5k app, weightwatchers etc I have managed to get this far.

I know Im perfectly fine weight wise now but I’m really interested in how to improve The muscle tone in my bottom. I am trying to do some form of exercise every day now whether that be swimming, a gym trip, jogging (did a 10K a few weeks ago in 1hr 25m so not exactly Paula R) or whatever.

In the gym I do a mix of Callanetics and weights (machines). I do squats and lunges etc. but my bum still looks droopy and inner thighs squidgy.

I eat really well and get as much protein down as possible every day.

I wonder if I just have unreasonable expectations of what a 50 year old bottom can look like!

So grateful for any advice!!! Has anyone ever really changed their shape at 50??

Deadlifts. Get one of the trainers at the gym to show you proper form. There's a variety of different ones and you can start with a kettle bell, they are amazing for the glutes.

Thank you v v much Heaven

Following... my bum is as flat as a pancake, feels like 2 whoopie cushions Blush
I've tried pump, squats, EVERYTHING!

HeavenHelp · 07/08/2018 09:00

Not a problem at all! I'll be following your post for sure Smile

Jupiter9 · 07/08/2018 13:56

I think ladies would prefer to have your behind than the pro trainer, it's took fake and not natural slim curves like yourself.

nbee84 · 07/08/2018 18:15

Body pump is great for toning all over - not a fast fix and obviously not as good as 'proper' weights in the gym. It's made a big difference to my arms and shoulders. Once I got up to 30kg for the squat track was when I really started to notice my backside lifting and rounding.

Jupiter9 · 07/08/2018 21:53

That's okay if you want to look like a bodybuilder and not a beautiful lady.

Electrascoffee · 07/08/2018 22:12

Jupiter - stop talking rubbish. Women who lift weights will just improve overall tone.

Electrascoffee · 07/08/2018 22:15

Here's an example of a woman who lifts a lot of weights.

Do squares make a bum bigger. I would like to tone my bum but not make it any bigger. It already has its own postcode.

Timefortea99 · 07/08/2018 22:21

Squats no ta squares!

Timefortea99 · 07/08/2018 22:22

I am not Italian. Bloody auto fill.

nbee84 · 07/08/2018 22:43

Maybe Jupiter was referring to the pictures at 08.20. Most women will not look like that after lifting weights. The lady in those pictures would have had to have put some serious hours, weights and diet to look like that.

Electrascoffee · 07/08/2018 22:44

Squats made my bum bigger. Which in my case was no bad thing. But my muscles respond very quickly to quite moderate weight lifting.

Jupiter9 · 08/08/2018 11:08

Electrascoffee the lady in the picture is far too thin, probably photoshopped. If she lifted too heavier weights she would snap like a twig. That's just my opinion. Others may disagree.

Jupiter9 · 08/08/2018 11:12

Also the lady in the picture probably won't look as slim as 50but17inside when she reaches 50.

Electrascoffee · 08/08/2018 13:43

It's Kayla Itsines. Yes I agree she does look too thin but my point is that women don't bulk up when we lift weights. We aren't made that way because we have lower testosterone.

50but17inside · 10/08/2018 09:03

So Day 12!! My quads and inner thighs are definitely changing no doubt about it, my bottom is firmer but it’s on my legs that I can see the most difference. I have been doing half sumo squats and half regular. Looking forward to learning proper weighted squat technique from trainer next week to really focus on my bum. Thank you so much for all advice above

If your before pics were my after pics I'd be happy op! Smile

Jupiter9 · 10/08/2018 09:35

Your doing really well and looking great.

50but17inside · 10/08/2018 15:39

Thank you very much for kind comments. Honestly I think the lighting helps in those photos. The reality in cold light of day is that I have very ordinary 50 year old flabby legs but I am determined to do something about it!!

It's day 24 how's the gym going?

50but17inside · 22/08/2018 09:34

Well ....! So I had a PT session on Saturday with the fabulous fitness professional which was so helpful. She looks absolutely incredible. My gym routine from now on will start with a bit of cardio and then basic moves to activate the glutes before moving on to weighted squats, platform step ups, reverse weighted lunges, lying leg curls etc.

I really felt it on Sunday believe me but have now been back twice more and am so pleased with progress photos. I’m only on 25kg for the squats but determined to build up

I'm really pleased that you are enjoying the gym and are reeping all the benefits. I've just got back from a 6 mile walk. 1 hour 30mins. ☺️

50but17inside · 23/08/2018 15:24

Jupiter, that’s proper marching pace I believe Smile
