Running in this heat

Trained for 5k that I did a few weeks ago. Kept going after that for a couple of weeks then went on holiday. Now I'm back and want to get on it again, but I can't bear to think about it in this heat! Gym isn't air conditioned so I was running along tow/cycle path, but it just seems too hot at the moment!

Any tips or inspiration to give myself motivation again in this weather welcome!

I’m training for a half-marathon which is in two months time, and I’m struggling in this heat. Running first thing avoids the worst of the heat, but if I’m doing a long run I need time to eat beforehand and do a bit of digesting first Grin

Is there anywhere shady you could run? There’s a path near us through a wood - it’s about 1km long and I just run up and down that when it’s too sunny. Bit boring admittedly!

Run early or late. Trail running in woods is usually a bit more comfortable but wear insect repellant! Shorter distances. Slower pace.

TBH as I’m not training for a race I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from running and have been doing different types of work outs at home. It’s been something of a treat but I’m sure I’ll be delighted to get to running come the end of the summer.

Get a treadmill, buy about 3 fans and point directly at the treadmill 😂😂 that's what I've done! X

I'm not managing the mileage I want to at the moment.

Sometimes I just grit my teeth and go, and come back a drippy sweaty beetroot. Cooler first thing (but this week even early morning temperatures have been over 20). Do drink just before you set off, and know where/how you would get water if you're out for some time.

Accept that your times will be wrecked. In half training, just aim for running for a particular amount of time (not the distance covered). If you can run for 90mins in this, you'll find your distance in that time picks up once it's cooler. If your breathing becomes laboured, or you think your heart might be racing, STOP.

I'm pretty sure that my lack of miles this month is going to make my '1000k in 2018' goal is out of reach (tbh, it was pretty flakey for a little while).

But as I need to keep training going, one thing I'm doing is Parkrun sandwiches. If you have a Parkrun 3-4 miles away, it's a useful length for training for a Half, and you have two hilt in breaks.

Try to have a cold drink before you go. If you have a drink with you, make part of it with crushed ice so it stays cooler for longer. Wear a hat or visor as keeping the sun off your face really helps. And some people soak wrist bands or hats in cold water before they go, haven't tried that one though.

Thanks all for the tips. Really eager to keep going so I'm gonna give early morning/late evening runs a go,even if it does mean getting up earlier! Hopefully its looking a tad cooler for next week, so fingers crossed I'll get back out there

I'm training for a half marathon in October and run early mornings. I find it's much cooler than late evening as the evenings I'm finding hot till about ten and I dot like running that late. I go about 6 in the morning and it's generally 19/20 ish and by the time I get home it's normally a bit warmer. Then I have a hotish shower so when I get out I feel cooler Smile
You can also buy some cooling towels off amazon for £6ish I struggle to low how to hold mine when I run but a friend of mine loves hers!

Basically what everyone else said.

But if you can keep running in this heat (don’t go chasing pbs), just imagine how fast you’ll be when it cools down in a month or two!

dangermouseisace · 27/07/2018 18:51

I've been running in this heat, including racing.

I just stick to shadier routes, and accept that I have to go a bit slower or stop for a rest at times until you cool down a bit or until your heart rate comes down. And take lots of water. You get used to it, and get to know your own body a bit better.

You do have to keep your wits about you so as to avoid heat exhaustion. If you stop sweating and start feeling dizzy, stop!!

Running at 6 am is the only way for me, I’ve been doing 6-7kms every morning and then one longer one at the weekend. It’s cooler forecast tomorrow so I’ve already planned my route for a longer run. To be honest, short runs, interval sprints, in the Warmer weather seem to have improved my fitness a lot. I take isotonics before running and freeze my water overnight as well.
