Overheating whilst running

hello,

I am on the Couch to 5 K, doing OK at week 6 run 2, but OMG I seem to have hit a wall.

This evening when I did my 2 x 10min runs, I suddenly felt overheated at about 6mins into my second run. I felt like my head was going to boil! I have now been back home for 20 mins, had a shower and I am still bright red in the face and radiating heat. The rest of me is OK.

Is this something you recognise? Is it just that I have reached my current limit? It is a bit muggy this evening, but I previously did the 20 min run on the treadmill without too much trouble. I really want to push on to the week 6 run 3, but I am now a little nervous.

What were you actually wearing today? Many people look overdressed for some runs, I find. I would badly overheat, too.

You'll have to experiment to find what works for you, I imagine.
If you are warm enough, start the run with your shirt damp, this will help keep you cool.

Are you menopausal? The menopause really messed up my running for a while.

Pinkvici22 · 30/05/2018 18:48

I was a bit like this yesterday. I ran 8k and afterwards I was dripping wet and burning up and felt like I had a dull ache headache for a few hours after. I did a HIIT workout this morning and whilst I didn’t feel as hot, it took me ages to cool down even after my shower.

I am not over dressed I don't think. I do have a hold it all in bra though.

I am peri-menopausal (44) and on my period today, maybe that didn't help?

Hormones are a bitch. It is really muggy weather where I am. Even my sweat was sweating when I was out running last night. Running knickers, crop top and sports bra - dripping. Had to wring my hair out. If you are a sweater, then you are a sweater. It’s my superpower.

I would be overdressed in this weather if I didn't wear shorts like this & a light shirt (short sleeve or sleeveless). Even though I LIKE running in the heat.

I thought being bright red/sweating was just part of running! I got back at the weekend from a long run and everything was soaked through and the sweat was running down my legs. I had to peel my clothes off me.

Sometimes when it’s hot it’s necessary to slow down a bit though.

Yeah, I’m a sweater too.

Make sure you’re well hydrated, like for 24 hrs before and take a drink with you sipping Little and often helps me. Slow down is great advice.

I did some sprints at 8.30am the other day and my face was red and blotchy and horrific for at least an hour afterwards.

I have somehow accumulated more long leggings than capris and I don’t really like shorts so I end up with only leggings clean and ready to go and it’s awful!
I try to make the most of it by running trails through brambles so they protect me!

I get really hot and the menopause isn't helping! I have a cold drink before going out, wear shorts & vest, visor to keep sun off my face, try and pick routes with shade. If you are taking a drinks bottle with you, try half filling it with crushed ice then adding water, it keeps it cooler.

LadyLance · 02/06/2018 20:31

You can get loose mesh tops which wick sweat- I find these better sometimes than tight fitting vests. I also find I sweat less in capris than in shorts- but my legs aren't used to getting much sun!

I always take water in a sports bottle when I run, and if I'm very hot I will also squirt some down my back or on my neck to help myself cool down.

If you're running on tarmac that can get really hot- shade makes an amazing amount of difference. But it is just really hot/humid at the moment, so maybe try to run later if you can or find a location which is more open and gives you more of a breeze?

I’m always red faced for at least an hour after running. But I’m not very good at all in hot weather. Any temp over 5deg and I have to wear short sleeves. Am wearing vest and shorts in this weather, which is tricky on the more overgrown footpaths.

Recently I’ve really struggled with hot feet too. Can anyone recommend nice, cool, CHEAP socks?

FaithEverPresent · 03/06/2018 15:54

I have this hat in grey. You wet it before you run and then when you flick the brim it releases water across your head. It’s really helped me to stay cool!

UrgentScurryfunge · 03/06/2018 18:43

Muggy is horrible as the humidity reduces the body's heat from being lost as the sweat evaporates.

Get off road into shade and vegetation
Be well hydrated
Red faced does improve with experience although some like me never avoid it
Earlier is better than evenings if possible

Did a HM today- 24oC by the time I finished! I was waterboarding myself each time I got a new waterbottle. I've never drunk so much during a race!
