Running shoes for a fat female beginner

Hi all, just wondering if anyone had any recommendations of running shoes for s newbie with a serious amount of weight to lose? I'll be running in a gym not out and about. Have already started and enjoying it (30seconds on 30seconds off) but struggling with my knee and wondering if replacing my old cheapo trainers might be a good thing to do to support my efforts?

I like my New Balance, good luck OP!

Good trainers and a good bra are both pretty damned important to runners!

Firstly, you need to go up a size from your shoe size, so you don't end up squishing your toes with the repeated percussion. (Ideally you would find out (from gait analysis at a running shop) if you need a neutral or a supportive sole, but for your very first pair, it probably won't matter). Looking for last season's colours from online outlets can bring the price down (but always buy from a shop or somewhere with a good returns policy).

How much are you prepared to Spend?

Ragnar · 13/05/2018 21:52

Thanks both.
Auntie Stella - my husband has just bought some for about £100 I think but he is used to running and so I wasn't sure if I'd need to spend that much. A decent bra is really hard with my size and since childhood this has been my excuse not to run! But I'm not doing a lot, just trying to build my stamina and improve my cardio at the moment

Gait analysis and advice from a proper running shop really helped me.
And YY to good bra too!

Underwired sports bra

I bought a pair of brooks and a pair of hokas from a running shop. £99 each but worth every penny as so comfortable and no more sore knees.

Ragnar · 13/05/2018 22:14

I'm a bit scared to do gait analysis because I can literally do 30 seconds before stopping at the moment :) I'll deffo try a running shop and get some advice though
I tend to wear a sports bra and tight sports vest top - none of the bravissimo ones fit :)

I have brooks too again and love them. Worth it. Also agree re gait analysis. Good luck!

EmpressOfSpartacus · 13/05/2018 22:18

I'm on my second pair of Brooks & yes, they're fantastic.

BikeRunSki · 13/05/2018 22:19

There are many different trainers out there, of many different shapes and sizes of feet. What works for me (Brooks), might it work for you. I really do recommend gait analysis. Go to an independent running shop - don't fret - they'll have come across larger, less fit runners before. But the cheapo trainers need to go!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/05/2018 22:19

You need gait analysis. No one can tell you what shoes will work for you because you need to know if you over pronate, how you land, etc.

Go to a decent running shop (NOT Sports Direct) and explain the situation. No one will laugh at you, if its a decent shop they will be supportive and helpful.

triwarrior · 13/05/2018 22:20

I second the suggestions to go to a running store. You need yo have a pro analyze your gait and suggest a shoe. Dont buy online unless you know what you need.

Great bras - shock absorber, Anita, wacoul. Test and try!

Synecdoche · 13/05/2018 22:21

Definitely go to a running shop and get them fitted. And don't worry - everyone has to buy their first pair of running shoes once in their life. When I got my first pair I think I was barely managing 30s on/off!!

SheepyFun · 13/05/2018 22:23

Just to warn you that some running shoes have a weight limit - decathlon do some with a user weight limit of 75kg. If you're tall, you wouldn't even be overweight at that. A running shop has no excuse for getting it wrong, but you might want to ask.

30 seconds is plenty of time for gait analysis.

theredjellybean · 13/05/2018 22:26

Asics gait analysis.. Brilliant. I wrote down the style they recommended and buy them at their outlet shops. Last pair were 30pounds reduced from 140. OK pretty garish colour but who cares.

Ragnar · 13/05/2018 22:30

Wow thanks everyone! Good to know 30 seconds is enough for a gait analysis but also look the wet footprint photo idea (as I head upstairs to the shower with a piece of craft paper in my hand :) )
Really appreciate everyone's comments, thankyou

Wolfiefan · 13/05/2018 22:38

I don't think I even managed 30 seconds!! Didn't matter. I love my Brookes.

Ragnar · 14/05/2018 07:19

Thanks wolfie

My first trainers I was not up to 30 seconds, I love my new balance because I've got really wide feet and shock absorber for my f cup. Enjoy it!

EmpressOfSpartacus · 14/05/2018 08:16

I recommend Hilly twin skin socks for going under your trainers! They stop you getting blisters.

Ragnar · 14/05/2018 10:48

Never heard of twin skin socks so will give those a Google, thanks

I do have a shock absorber but with 36 L boobs it's tough to keep them contained! :)

Also...have been recommended a local running shop and am going to brave a gait analysis on Thursday, it's only £20 and if you buy trainers from them then that's waived so perfectly reasonable! Exciting times :)
