How do you staff your stuff when running?

I've recently got into running but not sure where to put stuff like car keys, phone etc. I can just about squeeze a key into my leggings but that's it.
What do runners do for a bag?

Of course the title makes no sense.

STORE your stuff

All my leggings and shorts have a zipped pocket big enough for phone plus keys. If I am taking anything else, like water, food, or might need to stash proves and other layers, I wear a belt. I have a little one from Karrimor at Sports Direct and a bigger one from Innov 8. Dh has a flip belt that he likes. Other options would be a running backpack or hydration vest, or a jacket. For phones you can also get armbands

Why do you need your phone when you're running?

All I take is the house key. I have it on a ribbon loop, so it's easy to hold,

emummy · 13/04/2018 13:10

I take my phone to listen to podcasts, and to be able to call for help if I fall down one of the hills I regularly run on!

mistermagpie · 13/04/2018 13:12

I take my phone because I listen to music when I run, as do lots of people. I can fit mine (iPhone) in the back pocket of my leggings along with a key but that's about all I can get in.

I run home from work once a week and have a little bum-bag thing for that because I need to carry my work pass as well. I give my clothes/handbag to DH to bring home but we work in the same place! On a longer run I put jelly babies in the bum bag too.

I haven't found anything that carries water and is not annoying but I do need water for anything over 10 miles or so.

mistermagpie · 13/04/2018 13:14

Another useful thing about having your phone is to call for help if needed, you can use it to pay for things if you need to stop to buy water and mine has bus tickets on it (an app) in case I injured myself and couldn't walk home.

I sometimes take my door key off the fob and then loop a trainer lace through it when tying shoes on. If I do it carefully I can get it to almost sit flush along my foot IYSWIM? I haven't once lost it however have nearly come a cropper a few times with lamppost as I keep glancing down to check it's still there Wink

Bythepath · 13/04/2018 13:24

I always take my phone as I run on my own on hills. I put that in my zip pocket. I always run from home so don't need keys but they can fit in. If I take the car keys off. I also have a whistle that I wear round my neck incase I fall down a deep slope so I can blow that to draw attention. One of my DH'S friends fell and broke his ankle running alone so I always have the phone.

CloudCaptain · 13/04/2018 13:33

I wear my phone on an armband. Key in the tiny zip pocket or clip it to bra strap with a tiny carabiner.

PinkCalluna · 13/04/2018 13:35

I have a slim runners belt which fits my key, my phone and my emergency tenner.

It keeps everything strapped to my waist so it doesn’t bounce up and down.

I got it on Amazon I think, it wasn’t expensive.

PiggyPlumPie · 13/04/2018 13:38

I've got a buddy pouch. It's magnetic and holds phone, key, tissue, sweets etc. Did cost £20 but has been well used.

Hullabaloo31 · 13/04/2018 13:38

I have a flip belt (unbranded amazon one I think) as the armband I had drove me mad. I usually only take key and phone. Use my phone for music but would take it even if I didn't as I run alone on rural back roads.

AlbertaSimmons · 13/04/2018 13:40

If I'm just running, I don't take anything other than maybe a key in the pocket of my tights and my phone in a holster Velcro-ed to my arm. If I'm running to bootcamp say, I put all my stuff in my small backpack and wear that.

knottybeams · 13/04/2018 14:03

Key in leggings pocket, phone (with £10 in case) in bra

MayFayner · 13/04/2018 14:42

I too use the stretchy belt thing.

idontevengohere · 13/04/2018 14:51

I just take my phone in my zip pocket on my bum but can only run when DH is at home anyway so dont need a key.

Notmybag · 14/04/2018 21:03

Those belts look like the thing I need. Are they all much of a muchness?

I wouldn't go anywhere without phone and wallet. When I used to live in Belgium it was illegal to be out in public without any money.

What happens to bags at the Park Run? Is there somewhere to leave them?

AuntieStella · 14/04/2018 21:10

Yes.

There are two basic types:

a) the flip belt, which is a tube of Lycra with slits so you can stuff things in. The branded Ines also have a clip just inside one of the slits so you can attach keys. I find this sort the best for accessing packets of miniHaribo which fit beautifully.

b) the SPIbelt - a narrow but very stretchy zipped waist belt.

Both have non-branded versions available at lower prices.

I have both types. I prefer the flip (keys and if needed bus pass go in tights pockets, phone in belt) but on long to remote runs I wear both with a small water pouch and snacks inthe zipped one.

Fairylea · 14/04/2018 21:12

Spibelts are fab. You can even get a tiny clip on water bottle for them as well which is just enough for a sip here and there if you get a dry throat like I do!

AuntieStella · 14/04/2018 21:14

Oops - the 'yes' was to notmybag when she asked about types of belt.

But the answer about Parkrun and bags is yes - ish.

There will be a place where runners leave their bags, either just together on the ground, or in a fetching piece of blue tarpaulin. But it's only lightly supervised. So I wouldn't leave valuables there. Marshalls will probably manage to keep randoms away from the bag pile, but if someone is dressed like a runner, there's no check they're only taking their own stuff.

I always tried to carry as little as possible. I carried my phone, medication and a few gels in one of these www.thebuddypouch.co.uk and on long runs (marathon training) would go out before and stash water bottles and gels in strategic places along the route!

givemushypeasachance · 16/04/2018 10:12

I did try arm straps and belts for my phone when I started running but didn't get on with them since they slip down or jiggle about - I actually find this £1.99 hand-strap thing from Decathlon really useful. It means my phone is accessible for stopping/starting strava and skipping ads on podcasts, but I don't have to consciously hold the phone as much - less chance of dropping it too.
