15 weeks to feel amazing - How?

Hi all,
I am 53 years old and I am going on a trip of a lifetime in July. This is going to be hot and very active. I have lost 4 stone in preparation (about 1.5 more to go) but I want to focus on getting as fit as possible before I go. I currently go for a 10 - 12 mile walk each weekend but not much else.
My ideas are:
Yoga and pilates - I want a holistic sense of wellbeing as well as "gym" fitness
Half an hour of something before work - C25K? or Power walking (this needs to be time efficient)
Never going below 10k steps
What am I missing? What have you dome that has made you feel amazing in a limited amount of time?

HIIT workouts

Find them on YouTube. They don't need any equipment so you can do them at home, and they only take 20 mins
But I get happy hormones and tingles for the rest of the day, and sleep very well

Thanks Tenbob, but when I think of HIIT I think of those poor souls pushing themselves to the point of vomiting. I am really not up for that kind of self punishment. Anything that will ease this aging body into better shape without that level of trauma?!

What activity are you going to do during the July trip, can you start doing it now?

Swimming works for many people.

Treacletoots · 10/04/2018 15:46

Zumba /other dance class. I dropped a stone in a month and really enjoyed it too.

I would recommend HIIT - hard work but you get results. Don't be scared to listen to your own body and stop if you feel you need to, you certainly don't need to push yourself to the point that you are going to be sick! Joe Wicks' workouts are really good, there are a lot of YouTube for all different levels.

C25k. Go three times a week. You will feel so much better.

HatBox · 10/04/2018 16:16

July will include long walks, kayaking, swimming, cutting sugar cane and building work!

I have done a 5 mile walk, a pilates class and a yoga class today. I have also bought some new wireless headphone so I will start C25K tomorrow. I have also combined the Zumba and swimming ideas and I am going to try an Aqua Zumba class tomorrow!

You need to do something for upper body, then. Swimming twice a week for at least 40 minutes would do nicely.

Gardening sounds quite possibly helpful, too! Maybe you can find a local residential home (manor or nursing?) that could use some volunteers in their stately gardens?

HatBox · 10/04/2018 16:48

Yes! Of course - My upper body is pathetically weak. Swimming would be good. What about weights?

So far I have this plan:

Monday am C25K
Monday pm swim & weights in gym
Tuesday am Fast walk
Tuesday pm Pilates & cardio in gym
Wednesday am C25K
Wednesday pm Aqua Zumba & weights in Gym
Thursday am Fast walk
Thursday pm swim
Friday am C25K
Friday pm Yoga & weights in gym
Saturday rest
Sunday long hilly walk 10 -12 miles

Any thoughts?

Strength/weight training. I've just started it seriously with a trainer, and I'm so much stronger ad able to do my chosen dance activity (ballet) as I head for 60.

HatBox · 10/04/2018 20:14

Wow RagingGirl - that is really encouraging. How long have you been training for and how many times a week?

What kind of yoga do you practice? Ashtanga yoga is very good for building up strength and flexibility, but it's quite full-on if you're used to the gentler forms.
Try a class and see if you like it!

HatBox · 10/04/2018 20:50

It's a chilled out Hatha class usually. There is a Gen Chi yoga class on a t a time I could make - but I don't even know what that is!
I would love to try hot yoga too!
