Running advice! I'm ill!

Runners I need your opinion.

I'm set to do my first 10 mile tomorrow - I've been doing 10ks regularly and a normal run is anywhere between 4 - 7miles.

But Tuesday I was struck down with a really horrible cold virus, Wednesday was worse, thu started to feel a bit better.
I've been left with a bit of a barky cough & tight chest.

I can't run tomorrow can I? Sad
If it was 10k I'd limp round but asking my poor body to do an additional 4 miles feels a bit much.
Also, I have my 4yo soft play party in the afternoon to survive.

...Or should I just shut up and get it done?!

No. You’re ill. Don’t be daft. Listen to your body.

lljkk · 07/04/2018 18:29

Could you start & abandon if required?

BusterTheBulldog · 07/04/2018 18:35

Only you know how you really feel. If you started to feel better on thurs, I would probably go and accept that I’d be a bit slower, but I’d still like to do it.

For me, running can often clear my chest and make me feel better. But if you don’t feel plush in the mornibg then postpone

iVampire · 07/04/2018 18:38

Start, plan walking intervals (and stick to them, even if you start well) and abandon if you’re really not coping.

I have a fairly serious underlying medical condition, and minor alimants can absolutely floor me. But I try to keep running if at all possible (I feel better for exercise) - however I cut runs short as soon as it gets too difficult.

atrocious I know. I know. You're right. But...

Buster I find the same, a good run can stop a cold in it's tracks. As if your system gets flushed out. I don't have a temp or anything.

Lljkk thats a good point... I'm not sure - it's a linear race so no laps. I'll have to have a look at the route.

I might go for a steady mile once the kids are in bed to see how I feel.

Someone once said to me that if you're ill (cold etc) from the neck up then you should be ok to carry on exercising but if it's below the neck then rest... I'm not sure how scientific it is but it's something that always works for me?!

BusterTheBulldog · 08/04/2018 14:49

Did you do it lastone?? Hope you’re on the mend either way Smile

LastOneDancing · 08/04/2018 17:53

buster thanks for asking! No, after a pretty uncomfortable test mile last night, I decided against it & rightly so as the course was a killer from what I've heard!

I was very disappointed, but have found a 15k resolution run for the stroke association on 22nd so I will be doing that (all being well!) instead. It's a favourite charity of mine, so it's actually worked out well Smile

Sounds sensible LastOne, you definitely have to listen to your body at times. Sounds like you have a fab replacement too, so winning all round! Wink

If it makes you feel any better I’ve had to take at least five weeks off from any exercise due to illness. I tried to run too soon and it set me back massively Sad

LastOneDancing · 08/04/2018 21:57

Oh no callyourdad Sad
Are you a regular runner? Do you have any races booked in?
I've been really lucky injury/illness wise so far but it's so frustrating knowing your cardio is going down the pan but you're doing the right thing by not running.

I shall heed your story & give myself at least a week.

NO! I was always told that you can run with a cold above neck level but not below.
