Knee pain - tendonitis maybe?

AllertonRoad · 26/03/2018 10:51

I have a pretty good level of fitness through running but recently increased my miles. I have pain in one knee that I think is tendonitis. I have pain behind the knee and it hurts to walk up and down stairs.

I know I have to rest but will anything else help?

Also can I go to the gym to spinning or swimming?
Thanks

I have the same problem (pain in back of knee.) I have had it since January, and recovery has been two steps forward, one step back.

I have been spinning a few times a week in order to take the impact away, and also because it is one set movement. However, when I try anything else, I end up setting myself back! The advantage of changing to spin though is my fitness has improved greatly since doing it.

(If anyone comes on with suggestions with what to do to get rid of these knee problems that would be great!)

I had patellar tendonitis, I don't remember it as back of knee pain. More like stabbing pains on top/front. I still have grindy knees, really. I don't recall lifting leg up & down stairs was an issue, either.

time, anti-inflammatories. Friend swears by keeping the joint warm which I mostly agree with, too. I have knee warmers. My PT was caused by cycling which I don't expect to ever do a lot of, again. Higher cadence not a help b/c it's linked to repetition more than load.

Aside from my pain being front not back of the knee I could have written your post. I've always been ok with 8-10km as a long run but since upping the distance another 5/10km it really started to niggle but with a combination of ice & pain killers I carried on training and did a half marathon a few weeks ago. Annoyingly, for a fitness/stamina pov it felt great and I'd love to go for the full marathon but bugger me my knee was killing me by the of it and there's no way I could do (or train for)double the distance. I wonder whether some people are naturally more inclined as I've got it in my elbow too Sad.

I was chatting to a PT friend who is a keen long-distance runner and she's convinced strength training and Pilates are the key to staying injury free from running and I do think she might have a point.

Like you - I feel strong and my stamina is good. It’s just the knee pain that stops me!
It’s at the front but there’s now a tightness down my leg. Would a trip to the physio be worth it or am I best just resting?
Once I can I’ll start Pilates and spinning.
How long until it’s better does anyone know?

Agree with poster above. I was suffering with this and the only thing that fixed and maintains it is physio specially for the knee and foam rollering. Look after your glutes and quads and they will look after your knees.
