Weightlifting for beginners

I really want to incorporate strength training into a new fitness program. I know what to do to improve my cardio fitness, but I have no idea where to get correct info and guidance on weightlifting.

I would love to book in with a trainer at my gym but it costs ££'s I don't really have right now.

Any advice would be hugely appreciatedSmile

Does your gym have weights machines? If so, quite a lot of good videos on Youtube if you just search the name of the machine and the machine helps you to isolate the correct muscles. A couple of general points of advice

  • Set the weight heavy enough for a set of 10-12 so that the last rep is tough. Do 3-4 sets with a 90 sec to 2 min break in between. You can do a different exercise in the break if you want (to save time) providing it targets different muscles. The machines normally have a diagram on them showing you which muscles are targeted.
  • As you build a base of strength (after a few months) you can do shorter sets (5-6 reps) at a heavier weight which focuses more on the CNS chain and builds strength/ power more effectively.
  • Some people like to do a leg day and an upper body day separately but if you're just starting out, probably no need to.
  • Dont underestimate the power of body weight exercises like push ups, planks, hollow body holds, handstands, etc.

HTH. There really is a lot of good stuff online now. There is also a lot of bro-science but fortunately they seem to focus on the free weights and Crossfit Grin.

If you dont have machines and you need to do free weights then it's trickier because much higher injury risk so then I would save up and get some in-person input.

Crissfit has been my way to learn all the free weight / Olympic lifting movements in a personal training atmosphere but cheaper than PT prices. there's often specific weight lifting classes you can go to as part of it if you don't fancy the main HIT as much (although that's fun and works too so I wouldn't skip it)
