Pilates or yoga?

Hello! I have hip arthritis (I'm 41) so high impact exercise is off. Swimming is a faff and breaststroke hurts which is my favourite stroke. So I'm thinking of yoga or Pilates. I would like to improve my fitness and tone up. Which is best or will neither help with my goals? Thanks Smile

Yoga. Pilates is focused on core strength, whereas yoga is focused on not just core strength but full body strength and controlled flexibility.

I have pelvic and spinal problems and yoga has helped immensely. Just make sure you find an instructor who is British Wheel of Yoga qualified and fully understands your health restrictions (there will be moves that you need to do adaptations of).

I do both. They are actually quite different.

Pilates is a lot of core strengthening work.

Yoga is great for flexibility and toning up all over. Plus the bonus of mindfulness and mediation. Depending on the teacher it can be quite spiritual or more exercise focused.

I agree make sure you find a teacher who knows how to adapt for your restrictions whichever you decide to do.

I agree don't think it needs to be an either / or. And also depends a lot on the instructor or type of class (particularly with yoga).

Hi! I had a hip replacement last fall after years of ballet and athletics. I'm also a personal trainer. Pilates was designed for ballet dancers with injuries. I love the reformer machine because it's perfect for me. Yoga is different, and there are many types of yoga.... take a few classes to see which one works for you. Talk to the teachers. If you choose to have a THR please know that it's worth it and there's no more pain. I went for 4 years with incredible pain.

Piyo like someone else said is great ! I sweat and really feel it but it's low impact so no running down

I did my first ever yoga class 2 days ago and 24 hours later I felt like I'd run a marathon!

I do both and find yoga is more aggravating on my hip than pilates. A good instructor should be able adapt exercises for you.
