I need to do something physical but need it to not cause me harm , walking is great but I don't have much spare time , plus live in a rural area with not enough footpaths to do it safely after dark ! Don't have time to go to the gym , cannot afford a PT and local exercise classes seem to be aimed at people who don't work odd shifts .
So as a very overweight and very unfit person , and when I say very unfit I mean it , think two flights of stairs and I need a little sit down , are there any videos or youtube links you can suggest ?

Try HIIT short bursts of exercise and a little rest in between.

MikeAlphaMikeAlpha · 05/03/2018 20:34

Yoga with Adrienne that's on you tube, she has all sorts of 30 day workouts for free
Look up some of the old ones
Mr motivator, Daniella Westbrook's workout, Jane Fonda all of those are doable
Don't jump straight into insanity 💐

nbee84 · 05/03/2018 21:39

Try fitnessblender

You can put in difficulty level, amount of time you have and type of exercise you'd like to do and it'll pull up some workout videos for you.

I'd start of with some pilates or yoga and see how you get on with those and you can progress from there.

BIWI · 05/03/2018 21:47

As the saying goes, you can't out run a bad diet!

Far better to focus on your diet before you consider exercise for weight loss.

That said, there's obviously nothing wrong with starting to exercise, as it's good for you and will make you feel good too.

Lanaa · 05/03/2018 21:49

Look up Leslie Sansone Walk away the pounds. It's a walking based exercise that can be done indoors, there's multiple levels and you can do what you can. I've seen the dvds in Poundland but they're all on YouTube.

I think the shred is ok too. It may be a little tough on your knees if you're new to exercise, but it really works.

bluebird3 · 05/03/2018 21:55

Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. The workout is 20 min and she gives alternatives to make it easier or harder. It sounds like the easier version might still be tough but that's to be expected and will get easier the more you do it. Well done you for getting started! I need to do the same. Smile

WeightLoser · 05/03/2018 21:58

I second Leslie sansone... her 15 minute walk a mile at home you tube videos are fab

PanannyPanoo · 05/03/2018 22:04

I wouldn't start with 30 day shred. Have a look on Amazon

at 10 minute solutions very cheap and dated exercise broken into 10 minute chunks can do 1 or 5. Easy to build up. lots of different styles, dance, kick boxing, Pilates so you can choose one you are interested in

The firm dvd s again cheap and not recent. But very good and effective need some degree of co ordination

also
Tony Horton x90 again an older production no nonsense straight forward exercise in 30 min

They are all gentle encouraging instructors. That will hopefully motivate you. if you don't enjoy it you won't keep it up.

Move onto Jillian or Shaun T to get shouted at in a few months!

frumpety · 06/03/2018 15:16

Thank you everyone . Leslie Sansome stuff looks to be at my level , so will make a start there .

BIWI yeah you are right Smile

Fitness Blender is excellent!

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 06/03/2018 20:04

Far better to focus on your diet before you consider exercise for weight loss.

See, for me, this attitude is totally wrong. I couldn't do "diets" or "healthy eating" (I become food obsessed and crave more of everything - I've put weight on every time I've tried - I think I may have some serious food issues) but once exercise was added I naturally ate better. So whilst you can't out walk your fork, you don't need diet changes to be done first. I think getting fitter is the best way, for some people, to start, as the rest will follow naturally.

BIWI · 06/03/2018 22:53

Not so. Diet is 80% - or even 95%, depending on who you read - responsible for weight loss.

To give you an example, when I was running 5K regularly - which used to take me about 29-30 minutes, that would burn off around 330 calories.

It's very easy to overeat by 330 calories on a daily basis. So you'd need to be doing a lot of exercise on a regular basis to really clock up a decent calorie deficit.

That's not to say that exercise isn't good for you - undoubtedly it is. But there's also the whole difficult that exercise tends to make you hungry. The homeostasis drive of your body tells you that you need to eat to compensate for extra activity - and also the whole psychology of the thing. So many people have the whole mindset of 'well I've been to the gym/done a run/worked out hard, so I deserve that cake/Mars bar/muffin' etc.

Jessica Smith TV is great. She has all kinds of gentle, no equipment workouts. Her dog Peanut keeps me entertained too!

MelonKim · 07/03/2018 06:35

Agree about food. Eat less. That costs nothing.

Lovelyusername · 07/03/2018 06:36

Also think about a hypnotherapy book to help you examine why you are eating as you do.

Marissa Peer - ‘you can be thin’ really helped me, plus Jillian 30 shred and In a year I was so much fitter.

Fairylea · 07/03/2018 06:39

If you type “low impact cardio” into you tube a lot of good videos will come up. Ideally start with something along those lines to work out your heart a bit. I would also download an app like “active 10” and try to incorporate a lot more brisk walking into everyday- this will help to improve your overall fitness levels before moving on to anything more challenging.

This is how I started about 2 months ago and I am now able to run 2k without stopping (which amazes me)! Grin

MelonKim · 07/03/2018 06:39

I look at food and assess if it’s a good use of calories. If it’s some old shit I don’t eat it.

Also only ever eat at meals. And eat bigger meals. Eg muesli. Then I have a hot canteen lunch. Then nothing till 8pm. No snacking.

Fairylea · 07/03/2018 06:40

Meant to say - you say you don’t have much time for walking but the idea with the active 10 is that every minute counts. It’s not about how many steps you do or how far you walk, it’s about how fast. You can even do laps of your kitchen or living room!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 07/03/2018 06:48

I’m with the posters saying that diet is the most important thing. BUT, for someone very overweight, any regular exercise will have massive benefits. And, if you’re committed, you will see the weight drop off quickly. I do agree that increased exercise does encourage a better diet for many people. Make sure you are one of those people!!! Look at bad food as something that cancels out the exercise. And try to do some exercise first thing, before breakfast. Burns more fat. Good luck!

NeverTwerkNaked · 07/03/2018 07:29

Food is definitely the key. but I find doing more exercise (weirdly) makes me less hungry. It also makes me more inclined to make healthy choices. And keeps me busier which reduces the time I have to boredom eat/ comfort eat

We bought a second hand wii fit. There is a good mix of basic exercises and yoga etc.
Plus if you buy the wii just dance games they are lots of fun, so don’t feel like exercise

MsMartini · 07/03/2018 08:49

I agree with you Never. And it makes me happier/less stressed which helps me make healthy choices too, and enjoy my food. BIWI is right, of course, but exercise can help in ways that are not directly calorie-related, if you enjoy it and it makes you feel good. Good luck, OP, some great ideas here.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 07/03/2018 12:24

BIWI you totally missed my point. I agreed you can't out walk your fork. BUT for some people focusing on food first simply doesn't work (generally because of a fucked up relationship with food), whereas, exercise can make some people eat better without having to think about it. For some reason I naturally eat better when exercising, my appetite oddly reduces and I pick healthier foods without thinking about it. It also makes me happier and controls my anxiety, which prevents me stress eating or reaching for the chocolate (yes I realise I have a seriously messed up relationship with food). Any time I've tried to focus on my diet/healthy eating I end up obsessing about food, craving everything, feeling crappy about my weak self control and ultimately not only eating more but eating worse things thus having more calories and gaining weight.

So whilst it's good to remind people not to get in that "well I did X exercise so I'll treat myself to a " because they will likely undo the calorie deficit they created, I don't agree that diet should automatically be changed/focussed on first before you start exercising. Some people will do much better by focusing on the exercise and the healthy eating following.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 07/03/2018 12:41

Congratulations at making the decision to do something about it. I was in a similar place a few years ago - size 16/18 and unable to do even one flight of stairs without getting out of breath.

fatgirlscanrunblog.com/ This woman was an inspiration. I've noticed the biggest loss of fat when I can run regularly.

Also Jillian 30 Day Shred - it's short and she is very motivating, and you start seeing results quickly which also motivates. You will get hot, sweaty, maybe even feel like you want to throw up, but it works.

The Blood Sugar Diet also helped me with food cravings, now I crave nuts and not sugar.

Ditch the scales and just take measurements using a tape measure. There is nothing quite as motivating as losing that first inch.
