Ankles in agony after taking up running.

I started running (well jogging) with couch to 5k and I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it. However, my ankles, the inside where the sticky out bone is really hurt when I walk now, they're not visibly bruised or swollen but the pain is real on both sides.
I haven't run for a week and the pain is no better, do I need to find another way to keep fit? Has my fatty status crushed my ankles?
Admittedly I have a pair of cheap outdoor running trainers, they fit well. I'm very flat footed and have hyper-mobility so maybe it's that? I was hoping this would strengthen them of anything.

I built up to running by doing the walk at home videos - 3 miles a day to gently get me into it.

You need to get some better trainers ideally and you may also need insoles-find a specialist running shop they will often do free gait analysis. You can try some simple exercises to strengthen muscles around your ankles like standing on one leg, initially on the ground and then on an unstable surface like a wobble board/cushion.
You’ll probably need to rest until the pain goes-stretch, ice and swimming should be ok if that’s an option?

Do you think it's worth strapping them up with some sort of soft support while healing? I'm worried I'll ha e to start from scratch when I'm better. 😩

Yes you need more supportive shoes.

I wear motion control shoes with wedges on the insoles and still have to tie them very tightly or my ankles get sore on the insides.

When I injured my ankles I had to stop altogether for a couple of months. I had been running quite a lot by that point, though. I gave up the day before I was due to run my second half-marathon and had been running over 30 miles a week.

You probably haven't injured them as badly as that if you've been doing c25k. Just icing and resting for a week or so may help a lot. But have the gait analysis and get some more suitable shoes.
