Help - Skiing and Cycling

Advice needed!

Thanks to an unexpected diary move I have a big cycle ride I am training for the weekend after we are skiing. The cycling was already a challenge but I have a plan I am following no problems.

Last day on slopes Thursday...85 mile sportive on the Saturday.

Are cycle training and being ski fit compatible? Any advice or thoughts folks?

Definitely, it’s all quads I reckon. Not a professional at all but I ski and cycle. I would concentrate on the cycling training and do a load of ski sits as well.

Thanks viva. Feel less stressed already, that was my rough thinking!

Other stuff you could do I guess would be squats and lunges, would be good for skiing and also benefit general leg strength which would help cycling. But just cycling will build leg strength up as well which again will help, with sking.

I’m here Standingonlego 😄🚴❄️

I’ll have to come clean and say that I have not been skiing for 8 years, since DS was 1. Entirely due to not being able to afford it, rather than anything else.

Anyway, in my experience, cycling really helps with skiing. It’s all about quads! I used to ski really long days, long routes, which I also think will help with stamina for the Sportive. The altitude will help too. I think skiing and cycling are mutually beneficial, your main focus needs to be not being too tired on your return from skiing.

Which Sportive is it? I’m “training” for a scary 100 miles in June.

Most resorts have a gym - could you finish early on the slopes for a couple of days and do an hour or so on a spin bike?
The altitude would mean you get a better workout as well...

They are definitely complementary activities. Have never suffered thigh burn when skiing since beginning g to cycle to work. I think you'll just need shed loads of carbs and protein. What a hardship!

Your not that much skiing confession Grin

It is in the New Forest, April 14th. I have been really heartened by yours and vivas comments. My plan is to get my last long training ride the Monday pre-ski, then will be on slopes for a week - (happy to be cruising blues and reds), travel home Thurs, a big rest day on the Friday, then the cycle on Sat. I had not thought about the altitude training Grin Just need to be sensible on the apres-ski as well!

If you are Sportive fit before you go, then skiing will only enhance that, it won’t damage it. 85 mikes is s heck of a long ride though, my concern would be about being well rested for the ride.

Just reporting back.

Sportive 83 miles successfully completed in 6 hours!

Going to be tired tomorrow but did it despite heavy ski legs from the afternoon wallpaper paste snow!
