Any runners had to stop completely due to injury?

And if so how have you adapted to no longer running and what do you currently do to keep fit and healthy, avoid weight gain and maintain mental wellbeing?

Having been a keen running for over 12 years I have now been struggling with an injury for over a year and am slowly coming to the realisation that I may need to stop running permanently

My main concerns are keeping control of my weight (I much prefer to run than monitor what I eat!) and finding something else that gives me the same mental & physical boost as running

I can do exercise without any impact (swimming, cycling, pilates etc) but can't do anything high impact (anything that involves running or jumping)

I have had to stop for around 3 months due to bad shin pain (splints) and I totally sympathise. What is your injury? During my recovery I walked a lot (although was advised not to) and did spinning which gave me the same physical and mental benefits, but without the impact. I also did a lot of body strength workouts, ie, squats, pushups etc.

The benefits of running are high but the costs are also high
I had a habit of around 45 miles a week and then gave up for about a year because of injuries
I'm now back on about 20 miles a week, I also cycle and lift weights
I find that nothing really gives the same high😓

Yes, I stopped because of a reoccurring hip injury, and also because I was worried about the effect on my joints in later life.
I joined a lovely gym, and do a mixture of weight training, yoga, spin and swimming. I much prefer the variety, and it’s made me a lot more social as I used to run alone.
I’ve also found my metabolism is far better, I attribute that to the weights, and my body looks far more toned all over

Yep. Was basically told by rheumatologist that I could keep running, but will have major problems later in life! So I stopped. Still miss it. I did swimming for a while, which worked great and I loved it. Really good full body workout. But it depends how handy that is for you! I can’t get to a pool anymore, so it’s dance DVDs in the living room on an evening once the kiddies are in bed!

Yes, I have a mangle lower back. I use a x trainer, swim and do Pilates. I still miss running but it would be idiotic to go back to it

Yes I am presently nursing a torn miniscus and deciding wether I should get it operated on . Haven’t run for 6 months now miss it greatly but have upped my swimming (although can’t say I love it) and started doing more circuit training where I can control the amount of leg impact

Yep. I developed Achilles Bursitis after doing Couch to 5K after about 6 weeks in. I did all the recommended warm up exercises and had properly fitted running shoes so I've no idea what went wrong.

I couldn't put my left foot to the floor when I got out of bed - so one foot working properly and the other on tip toes - and I walked with a limp for about 6 months. It was so painful. My GP told me not to try running again. I use my exercise bike instead these days.

I had to stop running in September due to a tumour.

It grew so big I could hardly even walk, I couldn't sit up due to the size of it.

I'm 4 weeks post surgery and just managed my first power walk. 50 minutes and the first time I got my heart rate up in months. Feels sore but awesome.
Will get signed off to run in around 4-6 weeks and I can't wait.

I'm having to eat a lot less than I did. I was running around 30 miles a week, cycling 40 miles and hiking around 6 miles on my rest day.

Now I'm doing around 9000 steps a day and then having to rest for hours afterwards.
My TDEE has went from 2200 calories a day to 1600.

I developed hamstring tendonosis last January. So I haven't been able to run for a year. Have seen 3 different physios so far, and no one has been able to help. I now do 3 spin classes a week, and 2 bodypump classes, all of which I love and are keeping me fit and toned (as much as I can be), but oh, how I miss running...Sad

It's so frustrating isn't it

I have a recurring tendonitis on my ankle/foot

I miss the social side as have been advertised of a running club for years and also miss the excitement of races

Working out at the gym just feels a bit pointless as there is no big goal to aim for like a race

I also miss being outside in the fresh air whatever the weather

I used to run (in triathlons) but had to stop all that about 5 years ago due to a hamstring injury. It was a long time before I could do any sort of exercise again. It was psychologically very hard at the beginning. Initially I could do some pilates and swimming and managed my weight through changing my diet (but not drastically).

Nowadays I do weight training mostly and some hiit-type stuff. I love doing weights and the fact that you’re constantly progressing (more reps/ more weight) means I get that sense of achievement/ continual improvement I got with running/triathlon. My hamstring is pretty much fine now and I could probably start running again, and I do very short runs on the treadmill as part of my warmup or a hiit session, but I don’t really have a strong urge to run properly anymore - I prefer the weights. There’s something so satisfying about lifting heavy stuff!
