Central park run

I’m going to New York in 4 weeks with my mum. She has suggested we do a run in Central Park. She has done several marathons sub 4 hours so she will find it no trouble. I like the idea of running there but I have a few issues:

  • I can’t run well
  • I hate running with people
  • I don’t have long to train for it.
  • I can only train on a treadmill (living abroad and it’s -15C snow and ice here and I don’t have the kit for winter running)

I know there are various runs in the park but I am a bit of a perfectionist and don’t do anything unless I can do it well (huge mental issue I know...) So the main loop is 10km I believe..(?) Can I have some advice on how I can get there?

Before Thursday I hadn’t run in months. I have also put on a lot of weight recently. This is what I have done so far though:
Thurs - 1hr gym (light weights on legs, chest and stomach), then 3.6km in 30 mins.
Fri - 2.5km in 16 mins. 5 minute rest followed by stomach exercises, intensive speed intervals for 5 minutes. 5 min rest. Stomach exercises. Repeat cardio intervals.
Sat: 5km (first ever!) in 36 mins. It included a few bits of walking at a high pace. Rest. Stomach exercises. 5 mins of sprinting. Rest. Stomach exercises. 5 mins of sprinting.
Sun: 6 km walk with the kids pushing a pushchair uphill/downhill and through snow. Evening at home with a few stomach exercises.

I guess the stomach exercises aren’t related to the running but that is just being motivated to want to get rid of my mummy tummy. I seem to recover quickly from my runs and I don’t feel too sore although I can feel it. When I run for a long time the reason I stop is because I feel dizzy. So I guess that is my stamina which is the issue?

I can run again on Monday and Wednesday this week but hubby is away from Thurs to Monday so I won’t be able to go.. But after that what can I do to improve? Even if it’s not done in 4 weeks I want to get to 10k, and my goal in the next few months is to do in in under an hour.

Advise me please! :)

Walk/run is a good technique - the best known propounded is Jeff Galloway

He does a 5k/10k plan. www.jeffgalloway.com/about/

The C25K and various onwards to 10k plans work in the same way.

Have you looked at any already? Running about 3 times a week, and slowly increasing distance (and reducing walking breaks) is probably the way to do it.

And as your Central Park outing will be a bit too soon for reliability over 10k, also learn to tell your DMum with confidence that you are Jeffing (even if you're not)
