Fitness / exercise when on holiday, with no 'props'

We were away for 2 weeks over Christmas, flew with hand luggage only, so no room for trainers/running stuff & equipment.

Anyway, I really often felt in dire need of burning off some calories. I did manage a few long walks, but with young dc, and fitting in with other people, their routine and hospitality and new areas, it wasn't so easy. We moved around a lot too btw, and some of the places we stayed in had really noisy wooden floors, so squats etc not possible, or were plain scary, so not comfortable about venturing out alone.

So, with absolutely no equipment, and noisy floors, and young dc, what are the possibilities for doing something, anything, to get some sort of work out, and not come home feeling sluggish, like a lazy lard arse and 3 kilos gained?

I would describe myself as only a bit - to moderately active, but walk the dog at least twice a day, like to walk fast (when not with dc) and would like to get into weights, but no idea how to begin with that. But I hate feeling after a few days so hot, and immobile and fat and lazy!

I would like some sort of easy-to-follow tiring routine. I would def. consider buying an exercise 'thing' if it's very small and light, and actually exists!

Kayaking?
What do you wear on feet for walks with DC if not trainers?

rwalker · 07/01/2018 10:34

youtube yoga instructional video

ohfortuna · 07/01/2018 10:58

If you want to get into weights I suggest searching YouTube for body weight strength training exercises there's loads of info on YouTube for exercises and fitness

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/01/2018 11:38

Maybe I wasn't coming.

DH regularly tells me so! Kayaking is not something I could easily do if I'm having a long weekend staying in an Airbnb in Bristol.

I was wearing Chelsea boots? Trainers a bit a I would normally wear unless I was training. And I didn't have room in my hand luggage for running stuff. Am I abnormal in not wearing trainers? I figured rain was likely, so brought proper leather shoes with me.

I'm after some sort of exercise I can do without inconveniencing other people, eg my kids. They would come on a walk. But they wouldn't want to go out a 2nd time.

Something I can do to burn off loads of energy/calories/ while not at home with normal stuff with you. I could look at yoga you tube videos. Would that make me feel like I'd done something iyswim. I'm not looking for relaxation.

You're describing a lot of different situations, which isn't clear and might each need different planning; like 2 weeks at Xmas that you had to fly to only with hand luggage (did you fly to Bristol?), vs. a short city break (easier to bring trainers if travel by land, easier to find a swimming pool).

All the Youtube videos I've seen for possible indoor workouts involve some impact activity so not well-suited to flats above ground floor.

tbh, I would check a bag so I can go running (I couldn't squeeze my sleep clothes into carry-on, anyway). Budget airlines are so cheap, we can afford to check a bag each way.

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/01/2018 11:57

I mean only having hand luggage. No big car, no room for trainers.

OP posts:
lljkk · 07/01/2018 12:11

How big are your trainers?!

My dad has size 13. He is frail, too, so struggles to bring more than 1 pr of shoes when he travels b/c he has to keep bag size down. Rest of us, usually can make it happen.

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/01/2018 12:21

lljjkk, I'm totally fine if you don't have any ideas to my question, of exercise tips that don't include trainers (due to lack of space). I don't expect lots of people do know the answer. I neither expect nor or demand anyone to provide me with a magic solution. Just wondered if anyone did work out at home .

I don't understand however why you can't accept that I didn't have, and usually don't bring trainers when travelling with hand luggage only. My shoe size is 39 or 40, depending on the width and make. I had a small trolley case for 2 weeks. I had Christmas presents to take with me, and received gifts to bring back.

I had no room for trainers. I never take more than hand luggage, as it is quicker, cheaper, and more convenient.

I usually bring back English shopping, treats that I can't buy where I live, therefore, my small trolley case is usually very full. I think most people would agree that 2 weeks worth of luggage in one small trolley case, is not tons of space. And I did not have trainers with me.

Joe Wicks has a workout for hotel rooms that's not dependent on space/equipment/ground floor. I had a similar situation in the summer and did a few of those. I also just did the usual tabata/hiit stuff in motels and apartments because I reckon they only take about 20-30 minutes. Stuff like squats/lunges/press ups/mountain climbers don't make a huge amount of noise so it was only really the high knees/jacks/burpees that were noisy.

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/01/2018 18:31

Thanks girl, that looks greta. I don't really look at you tube, so it hadn't crossed my mind. That looks just what I need. Perfect. Now I can even try it at home and I'm all set for next time I go away. Thank you Smile

Barefoot HIIT training in your hotel room.

Body weight exercises.

20 minutes should do it!

Fintress · 07/01/2018 18:37

You could look at the Lazy Girl’s Sofa Workout. Lazy Girl

ErnestTheBavarian · 07/01/2018 18:38

might have to find a low impact one - floorboards seriously noisy! Shock

any tips on getting started with weights? (not to take in small trolley hand luggage)

The 30 day shred might be do-able in your circumstances: try small water bottles as weights for those sections (re-use disposables)

Or browse through all the workouts on FitnessBlender YouTube channel. There's bound to be something there which will appeal and which can be done with no kit (other than comfy clothes and supportive bra) in confined area - eg standing abs

ErnestTheBavarian · 08/01/2018 16:42

IS 30 day shred a dvd?

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 08/01/2018 19:25

Yes, and there are YouTube versions too

Tanaqui · 08/01/2018 21:21

The basics are squats, lunges, crunches, presss ups- you tube will give you lots of variety of this. However, I personally would sacrifice style and wear my trainers, as I don’t like lunging barefoot, and I would be hoping to squeeze in a run if possible!

ErnestTheBavarian · 08/01/2018 21:38

I sometimes manage to bring trainers. But teeny case half full of Christmas presents, Christmas with smart in laws, so felt obliged to bring nice dress and therefore suitable shoes. Other shoes were aforementioned Chelsea boots (as it turned out) wise choice because of inclement British weather. DH stupidly brought pale grey suede shoes and didn't wear them onceConfused

It's always a tough choice though, trainers or space for tea bags and custard powder. The tea and custard win most times. Hence the need for prop- free exercises. Good tip on the bra though. I did remember to bring a sports bra.
