Trainers to run in - just starting out!

Hi all
I'm hoping to start running this new year and really need a new pair of trainers.
I don't want to spend alot to start with but any recommendations as to what I should be looking for or avoiding and any best brands would really help me out!
Where I live is quite hilly - not sure if that has any baring

Also any general running tips always appreciated
TIA

I’d always recommend someone starting out gets a gait analysis down first, this should guide you towards what shoes you need. There are ‘DIY’ guides online, but having someone else do it is much better. I’ve always found local independent shops better than the chains, but it does depend on where you live.

Thanks.
I will have a look online.
There is an independent shop a few towns over that does gait analysis etc but they have a bit of a reputation for persuading you to get very expensive trainers

I thought gait analysis was a rip off till I got advised to buy the cheapest trainers in the shop.

Maybe I should try it and hope for cheap feet! Grin

You're never obligated to buy. I would recommend writing down the names of the trainers you like and seeing if you can find them cheaper online. Also going for old season shoes will help reduce cost. I've always had asics and love them.

Hi there,
I’d recommend a gait analysis and gain some advice from specialists. A decent pair of running shoes can be expensive but they will make the world of difference

I did couch to 5k last year in pair off the shelf running shoes. A couple of weeks before the end of C25K I did my gait and got measured... I’d been running in shoes that were too small and not for my running type!

I have Brooks Ghost running shoes and they are amazing and makes running a lot more pleasurable!

Good luck x

Thank you both
I will look into the gait thing. Just starting so don't want to get all the kit and never get out the house!

I had horrendous problems from running in the wrong shoes. After a year off with shin splints and calf issues, I went and got gait analysis done. Total change of shoes and insoles, I was doing 10k about 4months later from almost zero.

Money should go on bras and shoes. I ran in Aldi £3 leggings and old tshirts for ages - I’ve gog nice stuff now, birthday and Christmas presents.

SlothMama · 03/01/2018 20:14

Get your gait analysed, so you don't end up with the wrong shoes! I've had issues with my feet after my gait changed and I refused to accept I needed new shoes after only a few months...

Joining a couch to 5K group is a really good suggestion it motivates you and you meet some lovely new people! The first few runs are hard but stick at it, it's worth it :)

@SocksRock You make a good point.

Definitely the bras. I get mine from Sweaty Beaty in the sales, they are usually reduced from £45-£50 to £16-£20. They usually have a sale every other month, get on their mailing list! X
