Are fitness devices really worth it if you're already active?

I do not have, and have not had, any kind of fitness device. I would already consider myself fairly active (10 x 30 minute outside walks a day) plus average of 6 gym visits each week divided up between cardio and strength training.

Would a fitness device be of any genuine benefit?

I know that in the past 2/3 years they have become a big 'thing' with FitBit being the one I hear most about but I know there's a fair few others out there...

Just wasn't sure if I was missing out on something great or just being swept along into buying one like a sheep because it's an 'in' thing.

Budget not really an issue though I've probably missed the BlackFriday/Xmas deals but for those of you who were already active and got a fitness device of some kind, does it really benefit you in any way?

Wow, how do you fit in 5 hours worth of walking every day?

I would say you don't need one - you already know that you are very active and don't need motivation to up that or anything. And you are probably burning more than enough calories to be at a healthy weight.

Woops!!! That was supposed to be per week.
10 half hour walks per week. (Going back and forth to work)
Not per day, sorry.

Ah, I was thinking that was a hell of a lot of walking per day!

I think you probably don't need one. I like mine as I measure mileage for a walking challenge I'm doing and I like to measure swim distances with it.
I think if you're already active simply knowing the number of steps isn't really worth it, if you want to monitor run speeds/distances etc then thats a different thing (and I would suggest Garmin rather than Fitbit for that)

I mainly wear mine as have that Vitality health insurance thing which gives you points for steps that add up to cinema tickets, flight discounts etc. Probably wouldn't bother otherwise

A lot of people use it for motivation. There is something very satisfying about the numbers! Do you have any fitness goals that you could do with a bit of motivation for?

My polar GPS watch has tracking and it does encourage me on a lazy day.

Well theoretically I'm trying to loose weight and shape up though the good I do via exercise is, regrettably, mostly counted out by my poor diet.

If you are trying to lose weight, and you have the money to buy one, then it might be worth considering.

I have a rubbish old Tom Tom I use for running but would love something like the fitbit ionic, or (more realistic cause cheaper) the fitbit blaze.

I started logging all my runs on strava this summer and the amount I ran, and the intensity went through the roof. It really made such a big difference to my motivation being able to track all the data.
