Hip sore from running

I stopped running 4 months ago after I experiencedpain in my left hip, it took two weeks to recover. A few days ago I set out for just a gentle 5km run, used new trainers and the pain is back. In between I took up yoga thinking that maybe I needed to stretch, that doesn't seem to have helped either. Don't want to bother the doctor with this, but I am wondering if this could be more serious. My grandmother was very young when she needed a hip replacement.
I am at a lose, I miss running. What should I do?

I get pain in my hip. I brought a massage ball. And lie on it with it under the hip and it really eleviates the pain

squaresandsquares · 13/10/2017 20:41

Is it muscular?

I've done lots of work on my core which has helped

Where is the pain? On the inside or the outside of the hip?

I had this turned out to be hypermobility and I had ITB syndrome.
In my case foam rolling and physio helped a bit but I don't run much now, I've taken up cycling which suits me better.

I did couch25k and a few sessions in my hip pain was excruciating. I needed to ice it and couldn't sleep or sit. It was bursitis. It still aggravates now but I had an injection to help calm it. But the pain...my god, the pain.

This was on the outside of my hip. I could touch it.

Have you seen a sports physio? I had some pain in my hip and opposite leg but one session with a sports physio who was able to pin point various issues has been really useful.

Touch wood it's muscular? I get sore hips from running and can stretch it out with lots of it band stretches. I didn't stretch properly after my run this morning (I need to stretch lots) and my left hip is twingey. just had a hit bath and am going to stretch for a while before bed.

Maybe see a decent physio or osteopath?

I get this, I have a hypermobile SI joint. Physio has given me exercises to try and improve the muscles in that area to try and keep it in place. But it's been months.

I had a back injury a few years back and had terrible hip issues. It took quite a long time to resolve and was exaserbated by me over compensating with my stronger side and self medicating pain relief with a few additional gp prescriptions.

The physio who finally taught me how to rebalance gave me a really simple piece of advice for checking you're using both sides evenly. After a shower/ bath, walk across the bathroom and look back at your footprints. Are they even steps and prints? If not, you're possibly not using both sides evenly and this can cause an inbalance that leads to problems.

There are all sorts of everyday things that can lead to imbalance i.e. always carrying a heavy bag on one side. A good physio can make an amazing difference.

Thanks for everyone's helpful replies.
How can I tell if it is muscular or joint? It's hard for me to tell.
Interesting, someone mentioned carrying heavy on one side. I pull a suitcase with wheels on the right, this may have caused an imbalance. I think it is time to visit a physio, finding a good one is tricky though.

Good physio will know if its muscle or joint. Ask about for word of mouth recommendation.
