Running my first 10k next weekend

Hi All, I'm running my first 10K next Sunday at the London Zoo stampede and had planned when I signed up in May that by this point I would have run 10K at least twice with a few 8/9K runs under my belt.
Life, kids and a sinus infection mean I've only managed to run 6K and the last two weeks have been a write off leaving me worried I've lost any fitness I had gained.
Looking for advice really on whether I should push this week to do a 10K or just continue 2 or 3 4-6K runs?
Also should I look at new trainers or keep the old ones that are a bit past their best?
TIA

Do it!!

Stick with the properly broken-in trainers, never new for a race.

Plan your run. You need to make sure you don't start off too fast. Also, does the race have km markers? Because if so, you could use them to plan walk breaks - run to each and walk for 20 seconds when you pass them. If it all gets too much, make the walking intervals longer.

I did a 10k recently, and there were about 25 finishers over the 1hr 15 mark (that's around 12mph) and that's a good result. Having a goal of just getting really undo is absolutely fine (I did my first earlier this year)

The best thing you can do now is rest up. Do maybe one or two 3k jogs to keep muscles loose. You won't gain fitness in the last week so you might as well makes sure you are fresh - look up tapering.

Do not get new shoes for a race. Absolutely not.

Make sure you drink enough the day before, and don't set out too fast in the excitement.

It will be fine.

My keyboard hates me some days....

My first (only) 10K there were tons of people who walked loads of it, i got 72 minutes and there were hundreds behind me, appreciate it was a big one (leeds abbey dash) but still I think you'll be absolutely fine!! The atmosphere and adrenaline gave me an extra push! Have fun, well done for signing up GrinFlowers

Thanks all. I did a run yesterday and suddenly felt my fitness was back, I think I underestimated the effects of the sinus infection.
I'm feeling a little more like I could do it if I pace myself. I'll look up tapering and keep the old trainers.

I'll let you know how I get on! 🤞🏻

I did my first 10k this weekend in similar circumstances. I had entered it months ago with good intentions of upping my training. It never happened and at most I did three 5k runs a week. I just couldn't find the time to do longer during the week. I then had a stomach bug last week so didn't get in any practice. I managed the 10k in 66mins which I was very surprised about. I am probably feeling the lack of training today though as every muscle in my body hurts!

OP thanks for posting - this has given me a real boost. I've also got my first 10K coming up and don't feel like I've trained as much as I'd planned (life just gets in the way!).

Let us know how you get on! Good luck!

KillashandraRee · 12/09/2017 06:13

Exasperated that's a great time well done. I'd be happy with 66 minutes!

Vici I'll keep you posted!

Good luck for today killa

KillashandraRee · 22/09/2017 05:50

Thank you! I did it in 62.56 minutes so absolutely thrilled with my time, but my goodness it was so much harder than I thought. I only had about 3hrs broken sleep the night before as my boys were up all night and we were staying at a friends so I was really conscious of not keeping them up. I think I started too fast and then the last few K pushed myself to keep up with my friend. I spent most of the last few K swearing (a lot!)
But...my husband and my boys missed me finishing!! They thought I'd do it in 1hr10 so went for a coffee ShockSad

I'm thinking of signing up for the winter run in February...sounds like fun. Although I might try and do one more locally before then to see if I can do it without all the swearing!

Well done. I also did a 10k with no training and survived. I figured it was one parkrun to halfway then another to the end and paced myself accordingly.

Pinkvici22 · 22/09/2017 07:46

Wow that is amazing!!! I am so impressed with your time!
