One to one personal training sessions at the gym?

Hi

I'm a member of a private gym which is middle of the road in terms of the membership fees. I pay £29 per month which includes use of the gym, pool, spa and classes.

I had seen a poster in the gym from a personal training company offering 4 X 1 hour sessions for £28 as a trial. Obviously they want you to continue paying for sessions with them after the 4 sessions but it's not compulsory to book subsequent sessions.

So I had an introductory chat with the personal trainer today to discuss my goals etc. When I asked how much the sessions will be after the 4 trial sessions, I was told that he charges £40 per hourly session! I had to disguise my shock as I wasn't expecting it to be as expensive as this. Am I way off the mark or am I right that £40 per hourly sessions is extremely expensive?

I am in the North West so it's not London prices.

That's right unfortunately. Which is why I started going to a smaller gym offering 3 x 1 hr small group training (up to 5 others at a time) per week for £75 a month. I can't do exercise unless it's an appointment so this is the only thing that works for me. Try looking around your area for something similar if it would suit you.

I pay £35 per hour in the North West so not massively expensive. My trainer is excellent so worth it - that would be my question is how good/experienced/knowledgeable the trainer is. I'd do the trial sessions and see - it's worth paying a bit more for someone who's going to help you improve and make sure you don't pick up injuries...

I'm paying £25/hr which is a lower rate as I booked in bulk but I consider that pretty good. £40-5 would not shock me but I am London based so.. Really enjoy PT though. Suggest give it a go for a while.

I bulk buy and it works out at £30 an hour. I'd consider the cost as a whole (i.e. Introductory rate plus however many sessions at full price, then divide by total sessions). Many people only want to see a PT for a fixed period and then they carry on themselves, so I think it could be a good deal. I highly recommend PT sessions, personally it makes me work harder than I'd ever work myself, it's taught me correct form, and a load of different exercises I can do myself. The biggest benefit for me is that it keeps me accountable - I make sure I do stuff in between sessions as otherwise it's too painful lol! In fact am feeling the pain at the moment, saw my PT on Friday having not seen him for a month. I've barely been able to walk all weekend Shock

North West here.

I pay £20 per hour session in blocks. It's £30 if you pay session to session.

For that, I get my PT in his own private studio. We do free weights and Crossfit type stuff. He's amazing - well educated and has taught me (a biology PhD a thing or two about anatomy....). He spends lots of time understanding what I'm doing in other activities (running, sport) and tailors my sessions to maximise performance there. He buys new equipment if I seem like I need it (e.g. a weights vest, bungee ropes etc).

He put his prices up a while ago but refused to accept more money from me. So I buy him nice gin for Christmas Grin

Random bracketing....

It also isn't meant to sound as saucy as it does Wink

I suspect I know which company - is the gym total fitness?

I pay £60 an hour in the midlands for my coach in highly rated private gym. Body fats measured frequently and nutrition plans also given to whichever goals are set. Workouts programmed to the individual needs. You get what you pay for in most cases I've had a few coaches been with this one four years now.
