Best running socks.

I'm looking for more socks, but can't seem to find what I need. The ones I usually wear are from a store in Canada (not sold here) - they are double layer, cotton-rich & come above the ankle (not trainer liners).

Any recommendations?

My favourites are Hilly socks, there are mono skin and twin skin. I especially like their marathon socks.

I've got hilly twin layer socks. They are my favourite.

You really don't want cotton if you are running in British weather...

Asda do great running socks, oddly.

I came on to say Hilly twin skins too. They're brilliant.

Great thanks - I'll get some!

What is so great about special socks for running?
In ordinary socks do your feet get too sweaty, too smelly, too hot, or what?

dangermouseisace · 30/08/2017 00:29

I think the main purpose of running socks is to prevent blisters/rubbing your skin off. So the aim of them is to minimise friction.

Cotton socks, especially when damp, create friction. Normal socks have things like seams/loose threads in, which are ok if you are running a mile, but after 10 can make your feet bleed. They also don't tend to be as tight fitting as running socks so have material that can bunch and cause friction.

Running socks are usually made of material that doesn't hold water, and (usually) don't have seams etc that can irritate. Twin skin socks mean that the friction between your shoe and foot is absorbed mainly by the outer layer of sock, whilst the inner layer shouldn't move as much.

I've had blisters on the ball of my feet, underneath my toes, in between my toes, on both sides of my feet. It took me ages to find sock nirvana!

Ooh, very scientific, DangerMouse!
I don't get blisters, so am safe for now.

I didn't get blisters either until I got into running!

Someone at my gym recommended twin skins & they've made all the difference.

I run regularly, about 15 miles/week. In any old cheap nasty socks. Odd socks that kids have cast off. Airline freebies. Socks with holes in them. Any of those are fine (for me). Hot weather, cold weather, wet weather. Trails, fells, mud. 2 different pairs of shoes. No blisters. I haven't ever run more than 80 minutes in one session, I suppose that must matter.

I get blisters after a few days in hiking boots.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 31/08/2017 08:27

15 miles a week? Wow. I'm pleased with myself if I make 10 a week.

Maybe try the Hillys next time you're wearing hiking boots?

SageYourResoluteOracle · 31/08/2017 08:58

Yep- Hilly twin skins all the way for me too. I've done half marathons in them and my feet are brilliant afterwards, even if they're propping up the knackered, dehydrated, twisted wreck that the rest of my body is after running so far...

I do not do half marathons any more!!

Ah, took me a while to figure out that "Hillys" was a brand (#slow).
DD got terrible blisters this year (DoE expedition). On soles of her feet. Who knew you could get blisters there?. If she does DoE again next year, maybe I'll offer to treat her to posh socks. But she may refuse, not fashionable enough for her (sigh).

Reading reviews online, seems like the posh socks are especially appreciated by people who do long distances/hours.
