Fitness tracker - How many steps do you do a day?

Hi ladies. I'm wondering if you guys are using a fitness tracker and what is your average steps a day. I drive to the train station and back as it's an hours walk, so I struggle to get to 10,000 steps daily. I go to the gym 3-4 time a week and those days I get to about 12,000 daily but an average day would be about 6,000.

My average over the last seven days is 21500 per day.

Breakdown:
Tues 24993 (weightlifting + normal daily activity + sports session)
Wed 25534 (normal daily activity + 14km run)
Thurs 17841 (normal daily activity)
Fri 16949 (normal daily activity)
Sat 8275 (lazy day hangover)
Sun 33083 (22km run)
Mon 23829 (normal daily activity)

That's pretty low for me; I've been close to 200k before. But I usually have two weights sessions and two sports sessions a week, rather than one. And I skipped a training run.

I will add I have a very active job. I'm on my feet most of the day.

Wow I really need to up my game! My work is office based unfortunately...

I walk my dog for 10 minutes before work and then walk to the train station which takes around 25-30 minutes. My job is out in the community and also office based so if I am in the office it's another 15 minute walk each way and if I am visiting clients it depends on where they live. I get a lift back from the station normally. I nearly always hit around 10 - 11000 a day which is around 5 miles apparently . I want to hit more in future though and am interested to read what others do

catlover1987 · 22/08/2017 17:22

My work is office based but I walk to the train station and back (a mile each way) so my steps are usually around the 10k mark. On the days i go to the gym, it's closer to 15k I would say.

15-20k most days. London commuter, job spread out over a few sites.

HashiAsLarry · 22/08/2017 17:27

About 18k a day in term time (not a teacher but we walk to school)
Struggle to 14k in summer holidays

TheDonald · 22/08/2017 17:28

I'm office based and an average work day with no other activity only racks up 4k. Makes me realise why I struggle with my weight!

I run twice a week so on those days I usually get to 13-15k. I've been trying to get to 10k on the other days but I don't always get time if I work late.

Average is around 8k. I'm planning to build in another gym session in September. Maybe 2 mornings a week on non-running days. Weekends I easily get to 12k+.

Today I've been up Snowdon and I'm on 26.5k. My feet hurt though!

If you have a sedentary job, try thinking about where you can sneak in some extra steps. DH works in an office all day so has a brisk walk at lunchtime (can't run anymore due to knackered knees).

I have been known to engineer a walk in the evening if I think I haven't been active enough - going the long way round to pick up a pint of milk etc.

I get in 10k easily with the school run (on foot) or my commute plus getting up to get stuff from central printer. I have a wee alert thing on my fitbit that goes off every 20 minutes so I try and get a coffee/water/go for a wee/pointless walk unless I have a massive deadline. I'm sure my colleagues think I'm bonkers but if I'm working, I have no time to fit in any other exercise.

mummyclarke1987 · 22/08/2017 18:50

Thanks everybody! I only had my fitness watch for a week or so and work has been crazy busy because of people on leave. Once all this is done I'll go back to having a long walk at lunch and that should improve things.I have seen this beginners running class starting in September and I think I might join. I do gym, swimming and combat at the moment but I find running on the road particularly hard. Maybe this class will help.

Took my iwatch off three hours ago it had 20,986 on it had done the 12 hour stand goal and doubled the move one. That was heavy leg session and 40 minutes stair master which bumped the move bit up.

Ecureuil · 22/08/2017 21:20

About 15000. SAHM to 2 pre schoolers who don't stop moving! We spend most of our days out and about.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 23/08/2017 16:33

Just checked my iPhone. About 3400 so far today. Terrible. Won't make 4K today. Resolution for September is to get back into exercise. Hadn't even realised it had a step checker though so will start checking it more often and carrying it around more.

highinthesky · 23/08/2017 16:41

MaidOfStars you put us all to shame: 200,000 steps a day is quite something! You must have been on your feet and running for a good chunk of the day.

I try to do a minimum of 10,000 steps a day outside the home, it usually comes to between 12,000-16,000. If I go for a walk I try to make sure I get a minumum of 10k / 6 miles which is the equivalent of about 12,000 steps or 80 minutes, which is shocking when I think of what else I could be doing with that time. It can be quite hard to find the time if you are desk bound but the light evenings make it easier. I'll probably struggle to maintain this once the clocks go back.

LikeSilver · 23/08/2017 16:57

I average about 12k per day. On weekdays I usually do between 7k and 10k normal daily activity and then I try to do 30 minutes at the gym daily (mostly to get a break from the kids but it bumps up my steps). On weekends when I have time to walk to and from the gym instead of drive I have 10k done before 9am and usually end up on 18-20k and feel so much better for it; I wish I could walk in the morning every day. I find little things really add up - parking at the farthest away supermarket space, paying for petrol at the kiosk instead of at the pump, walking up and down all the supermarket aisles instead of just going straight for what you want.
