Weight lifting and body pump

You often hear people that lift weights dissing body pump classes, telling them that they ought to try real lifting. I just wondered why?

I enjoy body pump but wouldn't tell someone that lifts weights that they ought to be doing body pump instead.

For me it's several aspects - I enjoy training with 10 -15 other people - I love the music, it keeps me motivated and upbeat - the instructor is fun, informative and keeps an eye on our technique - it has made a big difference to my muscle tone.

I have had a couple of sessions with the trainers at the gym in the weights section - but working out alone, rightly or wrongly I'm not hugely comfortable exercising in a mainly male dominated area, not that I've ever had any comments or looks or anything. And I just don't come away from a session with that 'feel good factor' that I get from the pump classes.

Hi Koala,

Im under the impression that Crossfit is one of the cheapest forms of excercise going. I pay the equivalent of 90 pounds a month where I live, its an expensive part of the world, so I just googled and it seems its a pretty standard rate worldwide. Im paying in local currency what people are paying in the States and slightly less that people seem to pay in the UK. I can attend unlimited sessions.

Is it cultish? No, absolutely not. Im a very ordinary granny to 6 and I'd have nothing to with anything resembling a cult. It would scare the living daylights out of me.

Is it cliquey? Again - absolutely not. The ethos is based on being friendly and welcoming to all, that if you see a stranger in your Box you go and welcome them and make them feel at home. We have holiday makers coming to our Box and we exchange t-shirts with them and have pictures taken for the wall. And thats the beauty of Crossfit - you are supposed to be able to go anywhere in the world and fit right in.

Are there lots of injuries? Id also heard this said but I can't say Ive found it to be true. There are no heroes in the Box I go to and safety is paramount.

Is it hard on your body? I started it 4 months before I was 59 and I haven't felt so well for ages. Ive had no injuries and because I love it so much I only ever do what Im allowed to do. If I'm told during one of my PT sessions, thats it for the day, I listen to my coach and I never say oh please lets go up a weight. He knows what he's doing - Im still learning.

I cant stress enough how this has changed my life and to be honest I didn't even start going to the Box to do Crossfit. Some of my children are serious Crossfitters and they arranged for the coach to do personal training with me in the hope I'd be fit enough to do a Spartan Race in 2018, the year Im 60. Well, after a couple of months I said - I want to try this and ............ Grin

Next year Im hoping to do a Spartan Race but Im also hoping to take part in the Crossfit open doing a scaled masters for people my age. If I managed just one week, and Ive already managed one week this year as a wee practice after the open had finished I'll be really happy. Im really pleased with myself - big fat granny of 6 that I am.

Oh and I have terrible osteoarthritis in both knees. Stage 3. Im one stage away from needing knee replacements but even so I can still do Crossfit because I went had had injections of Synvisc One into my knees and I'm now like a spring chicken.

Mu severely disabled son is also a Crossfitter, its all adapted for him, and there is no way I'd be allowing him to go to Crossfit if there was any chance he'd be hurt.

Bloody Hell, 60 kg. That's all of me. Shock

I have tendonitis everywhere so can't imagine weights would ever be for me. Heavy loads & few reps... just No. I don't like loud music so classes out, anyway.

*being investigated for osteoarthritis now... before they move onto the inevitable tendonitis guess. Grin

Brexit, I also have tendonitis. I was knocked over on the dance floor when I was on a cruise. I promise I was stone cold sober. I hadn't even had one drink. I can honestly say another persons weight damaged my health😂

But seriously, I take care of it with a combination of deep tissue massage and pressure point massage.

The older I'm getting the more I'm using alternative therapies.

As for loud music - I've developed quite a liking for some of it but only in the Box.

MrsPeely, thanks for the info - that's bloody brilliant! Well, my interest is renewed.
