If you have run through a British winter could you please tell me what you wear to run in?

What works and what doesn't?

I wear my usual running gear but with a waterproof rain mac, the ones that are thin, if it's particularly cold I wear long sleeved tops. I don't layer because I get really hot even in the winter.

this is pretty much the same as my jacket I use for wet weather.

MusicToMyEars800 · 03/05/2017 11:47

also I wear full length trousers/leggings for when it's cold and 3/4 length for warmer weather.

A baseball cap makes a real difference in the rain.

Thermal running tights, if it's really cold (mine are Sweaty Betty) and a very lightweight waterproof jacket. If you really feel the cold, you can add a hat and lightweight running gloves, but running warms me a lot and I usually end up taking them off and stuffing them in my pockets.

Also, consider visibility, especially if you run with headphones. I have a sleeveless fluoro jacket I wear on top. A fluoro waterproof jacket would kill two birds with one stone.

I feel the cold so in winter I wear winter running tights, knee length socks, a merino base layer, a long sleeved top and a short sleeved top. Buff and baseball cap, running gloves. If it's very cold I'll add a silk long sleeved top too.

overmydeadbody · 03/05/2017 12:36

I don't usually bother with a waterproof, I'm layered up enough and the cap keeps the rain off my face.

naturalbaby · 03/05/2017 12:41

Full length tights/leggings, knee high socks, sometimes hot pants under leggings or shorts over the top, vest or tight fitted t-shirt and 2 long sleeved tops - one a thin thermal one and one a thicker winter running fleecy lined one from Aldi, lightweight jacket over the top - but I only wore it a couple of times in the snow. buff round neck, hat, running gloves and mittens over the top. I also had to insulate my phone as the battery kept dying when the temperature go below 0.

My kit is very old and can't afford to replace stuff yet so if it's wet then I go out expecting to get wet and knowing I'll be in a hot shower in an hour! I've looked into sealskinz socks to keep feet dry in future and have trail shoes for really wet/muddy conditions or snow.

I have a florescent pink waterproof running jacket that I'll put on over my usual gear. I get so hot though running I usually end up with it round my waist and it does my head in.
If it's freezing I'll wear a fleecey headband thing over my ears (think I got it in TK maxx), I tried running in a hat but it made my head too sweaty and itchy.

Light rain : can wear anything. I wouldn't run in heavy rain since can't stop feet from getting soaked (go to swim pool instead).

Cold: rarely more than 2 layers on body, I might start off with a cycling waterproof top.

cold & wet : hat maybe... buffs around my ears& neck are ideal. I can handle cold+wet quite well if my ears are kept warm.

My problem knees need to be warm, but I overheat easily -- can't handle overheating. It's a fine science to decide what to wear on legs. If very cold, I wear knee warmers (lycra elasticated tubes!) under other lycra leg covering.

Sleeves, buff(s), gloves are my essentials. Capri trousers can be useful to run in, with pockets to stuff sleeves-buff-gloves into if required, to adjust for inevitable overheating before the end.

I don't live in the Uk and run through a winter which is usually sub zero. I wear: tights, a long sleeve t shirt, a sweatshirt, a body warmer, a buff, a baseball hat and mittens (into which I insert those heated hand warmer things when it drops below -5). It's possible to run in freezing conditions and feel warm with this,

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/05/2017 03:36

I run in the rain but I get so hot that the rain doesn't actually hit me, it evaporates before it can get close.

Maybe that's just me.

Cold; as long as my ears are covered, I could be naked.

saladsmoothie · 04/05/2017 03:37

Thank you everyone.

As lots of people are saying, you end up taking stuff off as you get hot. Hmm. I think I'll need something waterproof, but I can't imagine how sweaty it would be to run in a waterproof.

At the moment I'm starting off in a light hoodie (cheap thing, not sportswear) and tying it round my waist about 20 minutes into my run. I run hard, and I do get very hot and sweaty.

I'm not sure how cold it's going to get here - not freezing, I don't think. But it will definitely rain a lot.

Have already taken the advice from YesILike and got myself a baseball cap.

Ear warmers a great idea.

And yes, visibility - thank you to whoever mentioned that. Hadn't thought of it. Good call.

In cold weather my 2nd layer might be a hoody, but go as light as you can. I'd have sleeves with that, too.

VictoriaMcdade · 04/05/2017 23:03

I wear long running tights and a merino long sleeved too with a zip at the neck that I can undo when I get too hot, a buff round my ears and running gloves. I'm afraid I'm mostly in black so I pretend that I am a slightly chubby ninja. 😀

I get really hot when I run so can't be doing with lots of layers. And the rain does not bother me.

Take heed of the old hillwalking maxim:

'Be Bold. Start Cold.'
