I think my husband has lost his mind. Running related.

My husband has been doing running events for 8 years now. 10ks, half marathons and 5 full marathons.

Last year he said he was giving up the full marathons as he was no longer enjoying it and he was finding it very hard going.
He hates doing the training and didn't use to train very hard but managed to pull it out the bag come race day.

He did his final marathon a year ago and I thought that was the end of it.

He has not done another event since. He has done a few runs for fun 10 miles or so but nothing for 6 months.

He's now dropped it on me he has yesterday signed up to a ultra+ marathon I think it was called. It's 62 miles and it's in 5 weeks time.

I think he's completely bonkers for even considering it let alone entering it. Seeing as he has done no training what so ever this year.

He says it will be fine, he doesn't have to run he can walk or walk and run but he's a stubborn competitive bugger and I don't think he will walk.

I'm really worried about him, I don't want him to do it full stop as I think it's complete and utter madness.

Can I have other peoples opinions to wether I should try and talk him out of it or just let him carry on?

Completely bonkers to do an ultra marathon in five weeks time, if he has not done any regular running.

Is he doing any running at the moment, or not. I guess if he is regularly running. 15 k + each week (per run, not total) then he may have a chance
Ce, but if he's not run for six months, then he is putting his health at risk. Why did he sign up? It seems crazy to me.

PurplePeopleEater2 · 23/04/2017 17:56

He's just started running again 2 weeks ago. He's done 3 45min sessions on the treadmill. That's it.

He did a 10 mile run a few days before Xmas but apart from that not a thing for 6 months.

I think he signed up to loose weight. He's gained a stone since Xmas so that is also not going to help things.

62 miles! How far he has he ran in total all ready? Is that all at once or do they get a break? Sounds like my idea of hell!

NotStoppedAllDay · 23/04/2017 18:08

It's usually over a couple of days or overnight

Is it race to the stones?

PurplePeopleEater2 · 23/04/2017 18:13

I don't know what run it is, he hasn't given me any details just it's at the end of next month and meals and snacks are included so I'm assuming they get breaks but as I haven't read the info I'm not sure.

He won't discuss it further with me until I calm down.

Just looked and it can't be Race to the stones as it's in July. The one he's doing is end of May

How old is he?

HemanOrSheRa · 23/04/2017 18:18

Do people not have to declare how much/what training they have done and are doing to enter?!

RJnomore1 · 23/04/2017 18:20

Yep lost the plot.

My dh is doing his first marathon in four weeks. He's started making noises about an ultra. I'm just nodding and smiling so far.

If yours has run marathons he MUST know himself.

PurplePeopleEater2 · 23/04/2017 18:21

He's 43.

No idea about declaring what training. I am normally in charge of the race registration but this was done behind my back. You would normally give a estimated finish time to determine what wave you go in.

It may well be that. The date fits end of May. Unless it's a midweek one and I can't see that.

I must admit I want to do race to the stones but I'd walk.

HemanOrSheRa · 23/04/2017 18:58

Well I'd be really angry and worried to OP. He should be thinking about tapering in 3 weeks time, if he's race ready, surely?

HemanOrSheRa · 23/04/2017 18:58

*too not to. Thank you phone.

7to25 · 23/04/2017 19:04

Stop being angry and worried. Show no reaction (lovely dear) tell him to up his life insurance and crack on with it.

carabos · 23/04/2017 19:37

I've got a couple of guys in my circle who do ultra marathons. One in his early thirties who has done Marathon des Sables and other ultras all around the world and one in his forties who has done less. They both spend pretty much all their free time running or cycling. The younger one in particular runs and runs and runs miles and miles and miles. Neither is overweight.

62 miles is a long long way and the most likely scenario is that he won't get round. Let's hope he doesn't injure himself.

Bumply · 23/04/2017 20:08

I'm a member of a running club and some of them do ultras.
They generally have checkpoints along the way that you have to reach within a certain time or you're taken off the course, so if he's really as unprepared as it sounds he won't make the whole distance

LovelyBath77 · 23/04/2017 20:42

If it's over a day or two it could be alright. Might be a challenge for him.

NotStoppedAllDay · 23/04/2017 20:52

I fancy an ultra too!

PurplePeopleEater2 · 23/04/2017 21:07

Life insurance- don't think he's covered for stupidity.

I've spoken to him and I'm out of order as I have little faith and I should trust his judgment.

As I said in my first post he's a stubborn bugger and he will do it to "prove me wrong" and he will, he will crawl round if he has too.

I just don't know where this has all come from as I thought he was done with all these events.

He's asked me to come along to the finish but I'm not prepared too as it's a long way from where we live. And well, I don't really want to.
I'm selfish apparently.

Whatever I'm not being a part of it. Il let him crack on.

OP posts:
PurplePeopleEater2 · 23/04/2017 21:08

Apparently it's not over a couple of days just one. He has no intention of stopping just for a wee and he will eat on the go.

Crazy absolutely crazy
