Excruciating pain in calves - running

bluestripymug · 19/02/2017 12:50

I've just started training for the GNR 2017. I feel quite fit but the pain in my calves, shins and arch of my feet is killing me! I feel like crying.
Has anyone overcome this? Any advice? Please!
TIA

Is it while running or afterwards? Does it stop you from running, does it go all the way up back of your legs? How far do you typically run & how long have you had any calf pain?

It's while running & yes it stops my from running. Although they ache for a few days after. Just all over my calves, a real burning pain and tightness. I'm new to running so not far, and I can't get far anyway without stopping.
Thanks for your reply!

What running shoes are you wearing? I've had all sorts of weird pains caused by ill fitting shoes.

Is it only running or does walking also bring the pain on? I agree about looking at your shoes, & maybe gait analysis would be worthwhile.

Running uses muscles in back of your thighs, that can mean pain all the way into your calves. But typically you feel the aches after, not during the run.

Have you got proper running shoes with decent support for your running style? The GNR is a half, isn't it? If you have arch pain, you need to sort that out now. If you haven't got properly fitted shoes, I strongly advise going to a specialist running shop and having your gait analysed.

Sorry, just to clarify why it matters that it's a half - with lesser distances you can 'get away with' (although it's not ideal) not having the right shoes, but to train for 13.1 miles, the mileage you need to put in, is such that you really need to get the shoes right, otherwise you risk injuring yourself in training and not making it to the start line.

I have good quality shoes but I wasn't fitted for them. I've been looking at gait analysis because yeah now it's been mentioned, my calves do sometimes hurt when I walk!
Thanks everyone, just wanted to check that it wasn't normal!
