Tell me what you do, and have you acheived weight loss and toning?

I'm fortunate to have a treadmill which I use 3-4x a week and some dumbbells. Have just started exercising again after a break (two babies, weight fell off with pushing the buggy everywhere, being stressed etc, but they're preschoolers now and its snuck back on).

Are kettle bells, resistance bands or any other home exercise thingys any good to those who have them?

I used to have a gym membership but moved and kids decided they HATED the creche there, so back to home exercising.

I have a few Jillian Micheals DVDs - 30 Day shred and yogalates. I use fitness blender a lot - a million different exercise routines covering HIIT, weights and toning etc. I also like bodyfit by Amy on youtube - shes very cheerful and encouraging.

My new passion is kettlebells - Paul Kattanami (sp), i have a 5kg and a 10kg bell. I have been only doing it a few weeks combined with low carbing it has given me my waist back!!

I am still very overweight - 4st! but its made the biggest difference out of anything. I also cycle twice a week 12 miles as fast as i can and i try and walk everywhere.

I now love exercising at home as i can fit it in around children. Now the weather is nice it has re energised my getting fit efforts and whilst i still have a long way to go, i think i have found something that works for me.

Fitness blender - free videos in YouTube, if you want a plan they provide various guides on their website. I use hand weights, and a mat. I've only just started though so 3 kg lost and my clothes are fitting better. About 7- 10kg to go.

RainbowFlower24 · 08/06/2016 11:06

I also follow the no s diet and try to make sure my plate is about half veg, 2 cupped hands carbs, one palm sized protein serve maximum as a general guideline as I can't be bothered with calorie counting or weighing food. My plates are 18cm diameter.

Zame · 08/06/2016 12:39

I started doing the couch to 5k and now I'm up to running 10k 3 times a week ish when it's not too hot :) I also swim occasionally, walk a lot and do DVDs like the shred.
I've lost almost 2 stone since the end of January, and my thighs are a lot more toned, I'd like to think my arms look better too. My stomach is still a bit of a disaster area, mostly due to loose skin I think but again there are definite Improvements. The only equipment I have is 1.5 kg weights.

stripeyzebra321 · 08/06/2016 16:21

I've got a treadmill and I use the 5k app. I also have a wonder core 2. It's a sit up bit of kit to do all your core easily and it's got a bar with a resistance band so it's like a rowing machine but your back goes up and down instead of rowing motion. I also have a basic yoga mat and use it for plank and bums.

I tend to watch a couple of YouTube vids for the areas I need I tend to do legs as I have everything else covered and I just make up my own kind of circuit and just do that twice if I haven't got ages.

Just toning I do 30mins if I go on the treadmill I do 30mins on that and 30 with some basic toning and a cool down.

I'm low carbing and lost a stone but I am finding the toning is giving me a bit of definition back in waist and my pot belly is starting to shift. Haven't noticed a difference in my legs where I'm always largest.

HysteriaLane · 08/06/2016 16:49

Thanks guys. I've invested in a 8kg kettlebell and the shred with weights dvd. It was between that and the 30 day shred so I'll start with this, though I hear a lot on MN about the 30 day shred. I'm low-carbing / Davina smart-carbing too, I bought her recipe book a while back and use it a lot, that and the mumsnet one!

stripeyzebra321 · 08/06/2016 17:32

Fair play to you 8kg is heavy. I picked up a 5kg in tesco and promptly put it back down again.

MrsMook · 08/06/2016 21:13

I casually go to a class at the council leisure centre, but otherwise DIY. I run and do shorter sessions using DVDs/ videos of yoga or strength. I have hand weights, kettlebells and a bar bell and other bits and pieces. Most of it can fit in a box.

pearlylum · 08/06/2016 21:28

I have never known anyone to maintain a long term exercise regime at home- sorry.
I know many people with treadmills, DVS, weights, etc, all now gathering dust.

HysteriaLane · 08/06/2016 22:52

Well the treadmill is DH's really as he works from home and does a 'walking desk' so he's not sat on his bum all day. Because its in his office, the office has now become a bit more of a gym, and we are actually sticking at it...but if it were in the house it would gather dust, its that mental thing of leaving the house to go to the garden office that makes it work somehow. I found the gym was less used to me because of being self-conscious, a bit like people who clean before the cleaner turns up in case s(he) thinks they're grubby Grin

I quite like some PopSugar workouts, preferably the ones with the experts. There's two good Pilates ones. I also like the 30 day fat burn

PetuliaGristle · 12/06/2016 08:17

Concerning motivation, having a goal and following a programme, and The Running Bug really helped me. You can log your runs (treadmill is an option) and the bug community are very supportive. I'm on the Etch Rock 401 Run With Ben challenge too, logging miles in support of a charity runner. MN has ongoing supportive exercise threads.

I also use the Zombies Run app, you're a runner in a post zombie apocalypse world. There are lots of missions and training plans with a storyline to keep things interesting. You can choose whether to be chased by zombies (useful for speed play) or not.

Another vote for kettlebells! I started off with Paul Katami and have now progressed to Kettlercise. I started 18 months ago, lost 3 stone last year and have kept it off since. I'm still kettlebelling regularly. I find it's important to keep getting new DVD's/workouts and progress upwards through the weights to keep things fresh and interesting.

HysteriaLane · 14/06/2016 19:45

Well I've done the Jillian dvd 3x now and love it! Kettlebelling is definitely my thing. Will check out Paul Kutami. At the moment I'm doing kettlebelling one day and running the next. I rest if I hurt but since the first go on the kettlebell and two days off to recover, I've been fine. My waist is getting definition and my abs are getting hard...just got to burn the flab on top which is my mission.

Sorry to hijack, but can I ask where you got your kettle bells from?

I've been looking on Amazon, but they all seem to have mixed reviews on there.

Thanks!

HysteriaLane · 15/06/2016 09:00

frances I bought mine from ebay. Much cheaper. Happy enough with it but find 'crusher style' hard to do as the weight is bulky and keeps slipping in my hands which by that point are sweaty. Considering weightlifters gloves!

OP posts:
FrancesHaHa · 15/06/2016 09:14

I'll have a look, thanks!

ProfYaffle · 15/06/2016 18:08

I got these from Ebay. Nice smooth handles, one I ordered from elsewhere has a nasty ridge in the handle which was a pain. Yy to gloves btw, stops my hands hurting and getting segs.

cheminotte · 15/06/2016 18:16

If you like shred with weights then level 1 and 2 of the original shred is on YouTube.
I try to go to an exercise class once a week, but otherwise do one run (about 5k) and one YouTube video. As well as Jillian Michaels there is also the Body Coach who is rather fit 😉

ZenNudist · 15/06/2016 20:46

I like this thread. Place marking for some ideas. I want a good 5kg kettle bell really as I used to do a class and I might as well pick up where I left off.

Just finished a joe wickes high impact/intensity work out and his ABs YouTube vid. I quite like him but he's not as good as shredding.

I worked my way through 30 day shred and was looking forward to starting ripped in 30 today after 2 weeks off on hol but dh has gone out with my memory stick that has my work outs on.

I can't go to gym. I only get 2 nights if the week dh definite around as he works away and those 2 nights I use to catch up at work. I like Jillian michaels as I can fit in 30 mins of exercises no excuses. I'd rAther that thsn waste it on mn!!😉

expatinscotland · 15/06/2016 20:59

I run a 10k 3-4x/week, have an exercise bike and do kettlebells and Body Coach vids.

loosechange · 15/06/2016 21:05

I did couch to 5 k until the weather turned. Then did Jillian Michaels dvds. I worked through various of these for over a year, and git good time, although I didn't lose the post c section overhang. No weight loss, but I didn't need /want to lose weight.

I stopped only for pregnancy, and am restarting gradually.

Exercising at home really worked for me. Cut out the time to go to and from the gym/pool and I could do it when I felt like it.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 18/06/2016 17:52

I ordered a kettlebell today. When I used to go to the gym (before I went back to work after DC3) it was my favourite class. Looking forward to it coming. It will be something to add to my running that I already do.

Going to check out some recommendations from this thread for workouts.

Abbeyroadview · 18/06/2016 18:55

I am LOVING my kettlebell. It came last friday and I've alread done 3-4 workouts plus runs. Did a 7k run / speed walk this evening outside too. Definitely feeling a teensy bit smug Grin
